SD ROUNDUP: Sikeston soccer defeats Saxony Lutheran on three goals from Vera; Softball takes down Neelyville 12-8

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Down two goals with 10 minutes to play, the Sikeston boys soccer team found a way to claw back into the game against Saxony Lutheran on the road on Monday.

The Bulldogs scored two goals in that time frame — both by Alfonso Vera — to get the game into overtime, and eventually win in penalty kicks 4-3. Vera finished with three goals in the match.

Sikeston (6-7) takes on Notre Dame Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., at the Sikeston Recreation Complex.

VOLLEYBALL

Jackson 2, Sikeston 0

SIKESTON — Hannah Shinn put down nine kills as Jackson volleyball clinched the regular-season conference championship of the SEMO Conference North Division with the 25-13, 25-21 win over Sikeston.

Mackenzie Stoner slammed eight kills for Jackson (9-1, 4-0 SEMO North Conference) while Emily Scott added five kills and two aces. Lainey Broussard tallied 20 assists, two kills and two aces for the Indians.

Sikeston dropped to 3-11 overall and finished 1-3 in the conference.

Scott City 2, Oran 0

SCOTT CITY, Mo. — Kaylee Payne delivered everywhere on the floor, but Oran fell short to Scott City on Tuesday.

Payne finished with four aces, a pair of kills and eight digs to lead the Eagles to their fifth win of the season.

Kaileigh Dirden nailed a game-high six kills to lead the Rams in the conference sweep of the Eagles at home.

Carlie Estes served three aces and Chloe Clayton recorded eight digs for Scott City (7-4-2, 1-1 SEMO South Conference).

Oran (4-9, 1-2) plays at Zalma next Monday. The match starts at 7:30 p.m.

Zalma 2, Charleston 0

ZALMA, Mo. — Strong serving helped lift the Bulldogs past the Blue Jays in the sweep at home on Monday.

Haley Gunn led the way with six aces for Zalma (5-11-1) and Alexus Hubbert added five aces for the Bulldogs.

Charleston fell to 1-7 on the season with the loss.

Malden 2, Oran 0

ORAN, Mo. — Kaylee Payne recorded seven kills and five digs to pace the Eagles in Monday’s road loss to the Green Wave.

Katelyn Streeter dished out 12 assists for Oran (4-8) and Savannah Below put up four blocks for the Eagles.

Malden strengthened its record to 9-3-1 with the win.

SOFTBALL

Sikeston 12, Neelyville 8

SIKESTON — After a one-hit performance against Notre Dame on Monday, the Sikeston softball team rebounded well on Tuesday against Neelyville.

The Bulldogs beat the Tigers 12-8 on 12 hits.

Four Bulldogs recorded multiple RBI games. Jordi James, Megan Witt, Katie Hampton, and Emma Drury all had two apiece in the win.

Sikeston led from start to finish, as Abby Cooper was able to weather a Neelyville comeback in the late innings. She gave up four earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking five Tigers.

Cooper also painted the strike zone, as she threw 62 percent of her pitches for strikes. She threw a first-pitch strike to 25 of the 36 batters she faced as well.

Sikeston (4-5) faces Chaffee on Thursday at the Sikeston Recreation Complex, at 4:30 p.m.

Chaffee 9, Saxony Lutheran 2

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Sydney Walker and Madeline Hendrix combined to pitch a two-hitter for Chaffee on Tuesday against Saxony Lutheran.

The Lady Devils won 9-2, as Walker pitched six innings, giving up just three hits on one earned run and striking out eight batters.

Hendrix then came in and pitched one inning, nearly striking out the side, as she struck out two of the three batters. She did give up three hits, and one earned run in her lone inning of work though.

At the dish, Walker also blasted a home run and finished 2-4 with a game-high four RBI.

Chaffee (7-4) takes on Naylor, at home, on Wednesday. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.

WOODLAND, Mo. — Kole Simms recorded a double and five RBIs as the Eagles only needed three innings to dispose of the Cardinals in Monday’s road rout.

Pitcher Todd Priggel got the complete-game win for Oran (4-6). All three runs were earned and he had two strikeouts and one walk.

Jacob Shoemaker added a double and two RBIs for the Eagles.

Cecil Abernathy went 2/3 of an inning on the mound to sustain the loss for Woodland (4-5). He surrendered seven unearned runs on four hits, walked two batters and struck out one.

SIKESTON — Sikeston improved to 2-6 on the season, after defeating Caruthersville at home on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs won 6-3, as Malyn Hodges, Alyssa Hillis, Kristiana Frazier and Naomi Frazier all won their singles matches.

Sikeston will take on Poplar Bluff, on the road, on Wednesday. The match is at 4 p.m.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL

JACKSON, Mo. — Sikeston had one lead against Jackson on Monday at Jackson High School, but the lead was very brief.

Adrian Blissett connected with Adrian Lawrence for a 50-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs an 8-6 lead, but the Indians answered right back. Jackson had a 45-yard touchdown pass and a 65-yard punt return to end the first quarter 18-8 en route to a 40-14 victory.

From there, Jackson never looked back. Sikeston did score one more time, as Lawrence intercepted the Jackson quarterback for a 70-yard touchdown to cut into the Indians lead — at the time it was 26-14.
