SD ROUNDUP: Malyn Hodges advances to quarterfinals in Sikeston Invitational; Oran baseball loses sloppy game to Advance

SIKESTON — Fredericktown, Charleston, Notre Dame, Kennet, and host-Sikeston made up the field for the Sikeston Invitational, at Sikeston High School, on Thursday morning.

In singles action, Alyssa Hillis lost her first-round matchup to Charleston’s DeQuilla Williams 8-6, while Malyn Hodges was the lone Bulldog to record a victory. Hodges defeated the Bluejays’ Ryshedah Smith 8-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, Hodges and Williams both had a hard time in their respective match-ups. Hodges fell to Kennett’s Emma Phillips, 8-1, while the Blackcats’ Starkey defeated Williams in a sweep, 8-0.

In doubles play, a pair of Charleston duos advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Nickkiyia Pratt and Tysheda Smith defeated Sikeston’s Naomi and Kristiana Frazier 8-1, before getting ousted in the quarterfinals to the Kennett duo of Sydni McAtee and Darcy Campbell 8-0. McAtee and Campbell went on to win the doubles portion of the tournament.

On the bottom half of the bracket, Anica Paris and Zakiya Wilson advanced to the quarterfinals on a walkover in the first round. The duo, though, fell to Claire Southard and Anna Grace Stroup 8-4.

DONIPHAN, Mo. — Struggles continued for the winless East Prairie softball team on Thursday, as it fell to Doniphan 11-1, at Quick Creek Park in Doniphan, Missouri.

East Prairie (0-4) only mustered one hit off of Kaylee Davis, who pitched lights out.

Extra base hits were the key for the Donnettes, as they had five of them in the game.

Doniphan (4-0) finished with 15 hits, as six Donnettes had multiple hits in the game.

The Eagles next game will be on Monday against Naylor. The game will be at home and is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

FALL BASEBALL

Advance 4, Oran 3

ADVANCE, Mo. — Oran struggled to get in a groove on Thursday, as it lost a tough one-run road game to Advance (4-3) 4-3.

The Eagles Kaden Hargrove was tagged for the loss, as he struggled to control the baseball — finishing with four walks — and did not have the best defense behind him. He finished the game going 3 1/3 innings and giving up two hits on zero unearned runs.

Oran’s defense did not make matters better, though, and the third inning was indicative of that. The Eagles committed three straight errors in the frame, which ultimately led to three runs scored.

Oran’s third baseman got tagged for two of the three errors.

After scoring three runs in the top of the first, though, Oran’s bats were seemingly quiet from there as well. Layton Keith and Hunter Curtis were able to eliminate Oran (2-5) from creating any further damage, as they both combined to retire 11 of the next 15 batters.

Oran retakes the diamond on Saturday, as it faces Woodland at home. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
