MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Cape Central girls tennis collect first victory over Notre Dame

The Cape Girardeau Central girls tennis team quickly rebounded after dropping its first game of the season a day earlier to eke out a historic win over crosstown conference rival Notre Dame in a 5-4 decision on Tuesday at Central High School.

It was the Tigers' first win ever against the Bulldogs. The two teams had only played each other once in both programs' existence, with the Notre Dame prevailing 8-1 last year. The Tigers won three singles and two doubles matches to come away with the victory and improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the SEMO Conference.

Notre Dame dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

Kaydi Rhodes carded a 7-over-par 43 to earn medalist honors, and the Indians picked up their second consecutive win of the season in the four-team match at the Crown Pointe Golf Club in Farmington, Missouri.

Elisabeth Seabaugh shot a 53 to pace Notre Dame.

Austin Welk netted one goal and had one assist as the Pirates shook off a three-game losing streak with a win over the Owls in the first round of the Windsor Tournament in Imperial, Missouri.

Trevor Schnurbusch and Stanley Volansky scored the other goals for Perryville (2-3). Bryce Brewer and Ethan Hadler chipped in one assist apiece for the Pirates.

Goalkeeper Ty Baudendistel made eight saves for the victors.

Tanner Berry scored the lone goal for Windsor (0-1) on an assist from Jake Mahon.

Owls goalkeeper Ian Phares had four saves.

FALL SOFTBALL

Jackson 15, East Prairie 1

Sierra Burch blasted two home runs and scored four runs as the Indians only needed four innings to dispose of the Eagles in the romp at home.

Katelyn Carter tossed a complete game to get the win for Jackson (2-3). She gave up one earned run and recorded eight strikeouts and three walks.

Abby Gates and Ashlyn Prince each doubled for the Indians. Prince also had two RBIs.

Adalyn Byassee went the distance in the circle and took the loss for East Prairie (0-1). She surrendered 11 earned runs, walked six batters and had one strikeout.

Macey Smith hit a double and drove in two runs, but the Crusaders were unable to fend off the host Lancers, who scored nine runs over the final two innings for a five-innings win at home.

Zoie Roth pitched 3 1/3 innings to suffer the loss for Saxony Lutheran (1-2). She allowed seven runs (three earned) on five hits, walked five batters and struck out three.

A.J. Agers went the distance in the circle to obtain the win for St. Pius X (2-1-1). She gave up three unearned runs and recorded seven strikeouts and two walks.

Payton Baker had a double and three RBIs to help propel the Lancers.

Woodland Invitational

The host Cardinals posted a 4-2 record in pool play to come out on top of Pool A and draw the top seed heading into Thursday's quarterfinals of the Woodland Invitational Tournament.

Woodland swept Oak Ridge 19-13, 19-10 in its first game, then toppled Leopold 19-15, 19-12 before dropping its final game of the night to Saxony Lutheran 17-19, 7-19. Maddison Altenthal finished with 10 kills and nine assists on the night to lead the Cardinals. Tiana Wiseman contributed seven blocks and five kills, and Addie Johnson dished out 11 assists cumulatively for Woodland (2-1).

The Cardinals will open tournament bracket action at 4 p.m. Thursday against SCAA Conference foe and eighth-seeded Bell City. Leopold and Oak Ridge both ended up going 3-3 in pool play, with the Wildcats drawing the second seed due to point differential.

The Wildcats opened tournament action with a 19-12, 19-11 victory over Saxony before dropping both sets to the host Cardinals and then finishing the night with a 17-19, 19-12 split with Oak Ridge. Kyla Beel led the way for the Wildcats with 18 digs and 16 kills on the night. Patience VanderMierden also recorded a double-double with 31 assists and 18 digs for Leopold (1-1-1), which got 26 assists, seven kills and five digs from freshman Paige Davis. Lindsay Duckworth contributed four kills and four digs for the Wildcats in their final match with the BlueJays.

Oak Ridge handled Saxony 19-17, 19-13 in the other final pool-play game of the evening. Macy Morehead paced the Crusaders with 15 kills and two aces overall. Olivia Voelker contributed 19 cumulative assists and Makayla Mueller notched 11 digs for Saxony (1-2), which will square off against fifth-seeded Zalma at 5 p.m. Thursday in the second quarterfinal of the night.

Second-seeded Leopold will face seventh-seeded Greenville at 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by third-seeded Oak Ridge going up against sixth-seeded Meadow Heights at 7 p.m. The semifinals, third-place and championship games will be played Friday. No consolation bracket games will be played Friday.

Individual stats for Oak Ridge were not provided.

Perryville 25 25, Valle Catholic 15 19

Jaiden Garris nailed five kills as the Pirates made their season debut with a win over the Class 1 perennial powerhouse Warriors on the road in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

Camryn Baer chipped in three kills for Perryville (1-0) and Trinity Riney tallied five digs. Sydney Spears contributed eight assists for the Pirates and Avery Wibbenmeyer dished out six assists.

It was also the first game of the season and the first loss for Valle Catholic.

Maegyn Huber recorded five kills to pace the host Indians in their season-opening loss at home in the battle of the tribes.

Molly Myers added four kills for St. Vincent (0-1). Kara Kassel also had four kills and notched five digs for the hosts while Megan Hennemann provided 12 assists.

It was also the first game of the season and first win of the season for Jackson.

Heather Conaway nailed four kills as the Rams were unable to carry the momentum over from their season-opening victory Monday in the straight-set loss to the Eagles on the road in Hillsboro, Missouri.

Kaileigh Dirden put up two blocks for Scott City (1-1) and Paige Cummins notched four digs.

Eagle Ridge wins two

Eagle Ridge Christian School picked up a pair of victories, sweeping Heritage Classical Christian Academy of Fenton, Missouri, in two sets and downing host Maryville Christian School of Maryville, Illinois, in three sets.

In the first match, Eagle Ridge (3-0) won 21-25, 25-19, 16-14 over Maryville as Sarah Jackson had 15 assists and 11 digs. Olivia Lambert recorded 10 kills and Jaci Crank added two kills.

In the second match, Eagle Ridge rolled past Heritage Classical Christian Academy 25-22, 25-16. Jackson had another standout game with 15 assists and 12 digs. Rachel Margrabe chipped in 15 digs and three kills and Lambert added eight kills.

BASEBALL

Bell City 9, Puxico 1

Jeffrey Allen and Austin Hunt each hit a double as the Cubs opened their fall season with a comfortable win at home over the Indians.

Andrew Hicks hurled six innings to earn the win for Bell City (1-0). He gave up no runs on three hits and walked two.

Dalton Phillips lasted 3 2/3 innings on the mound to endure the loss for Puxico (0-2). He allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits, walked six and struck out two.
