Local volleyball players pick up all-region, all-state honors

Local high school volleyball players recently received postseason honors following the release of all the all-regional and all-state teams by the Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Association.

Topping the list of local honorees was Advance junior Alanis Below in Class 1, who was the only local athlete named to both the all-regional and all-state first teams. Below helped lead the Hornets to their first district title since 2012, dethroning five-time defending district champion and SCAA Conference foe Bernie in the process. Senior teammate Brylee Morse was named to the all-regional first team and received an all-state honorable mention nod. Advance fell to Lesterville in three sets in the first round of the Class 1 state sectionals and ended its season with a record of 27-9-2.

St. Vincent junior Jackie Verseman was also named to the all-regional first team and all-state second team. Verseman was a key force on the court for the Indians, whose season came to an end at the hands of perennial powerhouse Valle Catholic in the Class 1 District 4 championship match. The Warriors went on to take second place at the Class 1 state tournament, falling to Northland Christian School in the championship game. St. Vincent finished its season with a record of 16-21-1.

Woodland’s Krista Rhodes was the only local player to receive honors in Class 2. The junior was named to all-regional first team and honorable mention all-state. Rhodes was instrumental in Woodland’s success as the Cardinals closed out their season at 20-11-3 and took second place in the Class 2 District 2 tournament, losing in the title match to SCAA Conference rival Bloomfield.

In Class 3, Notre Dame senior Sam Brennan was bestowed with all-regional first team and all-state second team honors. The Bulldogs’ season was cut short in the District 1 tournament, losing to Dexter in the semifinals and finishing at 26-8-4 on the year. Perryville sophomore Camryn Baer rounded out the list of local recipients, garnering all-regional first team and all-state honorable mention. The Pirates fell to Dexter for the District 1 championship and wrapped up their season with a record of 20-13-4.

Dexter junior Krysten Garrison received all-regional and all-state first team honors in Class 3. The Bearcats clinched the District 1 championship and downed Rosati-Kain in the first round of the Class 3 sectionals before dropping a three-set match to Lutheran South, the team that went on to win the Class 3 state championship, in the quarterfinals.
