  • Could some ref. respond the the correct call when: A defensive player standing under the basket, arms straight up in the air and an offensive player is putting a rebounded ball back up and his shot takes him slightly toward the basket making arm, elbow, and or body contact with the defensive player and the FOUL is called on the defensive player. I know players are coached to stand their ground straight up in the air and they will be ok. I see this time and time again and it is frustrating to spectators and players.

  • The rule concerning verticality allows each player(off. and def.)to occupy the space above them . If the defensive player has established position and standing with arms straight and the offensive player attempts a shot by going into the defensive player then typically no call is made. Each player has a right to his/her space. The coach of the offensive player typically wants a foul though. Sometimes though the defensive player makes contact on the arms or lower body and then finishes with their arms straight up. You have to see the whole play, and rule accordingly. Hope this helps some.
