High School Basketball Forum: Key Games (Week of Mar. 1)

Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sun, Mar 1, 2015, at 11:59 PM:

Welcome back to "Key Games," your on-line guide to the best games in high school basketball in Southeast Missouri!

The regular season is now history and it's officially playoff time for all classes. Classes 1-3 played their district tournaments last week and move on to sectionals and the quarterfinals this week. Classes 4-5 play their districts this week.

There is actually one district tournament yet to conclude from last week. Bad weather forced the postponement of C2D2 championship games at Van Buren from Saturday to Monday. C4D2 at Ste. Genevieve was supposed to begin play yesterday (Saturday), but again Mother Nature interfered, and the games were rescheduled for Monday night.

One change from previous editions of "Key Games" is that we will be featuring both boys and girls games. With fewer games to report as the playoffs progress, and with girls' and boys' teams often playing at their games at the same location, it just makes sense to me to do that.

There are so many important games this week, but without a doubt, the most highly anticipated game is the Class 3 Sectional between NMCC and Charleston. So that is this week's Marquee Match-Up! The game is Wednesday night in Dexter at the Bearcat Event Center. The two best guards in Semo, Charleston's Del Bogan and NMCC's Willie Jimerson will face off one last time! The Eagles defeated the Bluejays at the Jay's Nest for the first time in 8 games earlier this season in a close battle. Charleston will be looking to avenge that loss and continue their postseason dominance of NMCC.

Let me once again tank everyone for continuing to make "Key Games" one of the most popular weekly threads on Semoball! Last week's edition had 384 posts which is just remarkable! Also a word of thanks to my Semoball partner BuckMajor for using "Key Games" on his "Roundball PickEm" each week. And be sure and keep your eyes peeled for the next "Slam Dunk Top 10" which will be written once again by BuckMajor! His last write-up was priceless and I can't wait to read what he has in store this time around!

As always, feel free to post scores, updates, corrections, debate outcomes, etc. We will keep track of all the playoff games on this thread as the week advances, so keep checking back with us!

Now on to this week's slate of "Key Games"! Be careful out there and good luck to all Semo teams!

Looks like there should be some good games this week! C4D1 I guess at least one state ranked team won't even make it out of districts.

  • That C3 at Dexter on the 4th is that time right? 6 pm for the boys? I see no time for the girls game is why Im asking.

  • 2 good nights in Stoddard county. I'm thinking advance over Gideon Tuesday night, and NMCC over charleston Wednesday. Also would like to see the saxony lutheran/park hills game on the 7th.

Semoball68-the girls game is at 7:45, according to mshsaa website.

  • I love it Buck. Reminiscent of the way it was 7-8 years ago. Both ND and Sikeston could have made it to the Final Four numerous years but were knocked off by one another.

  • Semolian is right. The girls game Wednesday night at Dexter is 7:45 p.m. I accidently left off the time. Sorry about that!

  • Class 4 Dist. 1 winners....7 of the last 11 made it to state. And many of those years the 2nd place team, or even third best team, were capable of making state runs.

    2004 - Dexter, 4th in state

    2005 - Notre Dame, 4th in state

    2006 - Sikeston, 2nd in state

    2007 - Notre Dame, 2nd in state

2008 - Notre Dame, state champs

2009 - Sikeston, lost to Borgia in quarters

2010 - Sikeston, lost to Borgia in quarters

    2011 - Sikeston, state champs

2012 - Sikeston, lost to Imagine Prep in quarters

    2013 - Sikeston, 3rd in state

2014 - Cape Central, lost to Farmington in sectionals

  • Porch, I started to list those games for the very reasons you mentioned, but just didn't because they aren't Semo teams. But I do appreciate you listing them for us.

-- Posted by TFA on Mon, Mar 2, 2015, at 9:16 PM
  • TFA, Coach Dowdy knows there's no way for Dexter to run with Sikeston, so he tried to slow it down and take the Bulldogs out of their game. It didn't work the first time they played and it sound like it's not working any better tonight, but what else can you do?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Mon, Mar 2, 2015, at 9:45 PM
  • Sikeston leads Dexter 58-29 after 3.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Mon, Mar 2, 2015, at 9:46 PM
  • Sikeston defeats Dexter 76-50.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Mon, Mar 2, 2015, at 9:49 PM
  • Yes and I understand that Preach but seriously your guys did better fast. You have some good 3 point shooters on your team. Good try Dexter Ya never gave up. Like that in a team.

-- Posted by TFA on Mon, Mar 2, 2015, at 9:59 PM
  • I wasn't at the game TFA, so I'll take your word for it. The good news is that Dexter is only losing two starters, Pollock and Kronk, neither of whom were big scorers, though they were great defenders. 6'3" freshman Gabe Jackson will almost certainly be a varsity starter next season. If Cole Renken (also 6'3") returns for his senior season, that will give us some height and an inside presence we sorely lacked this season. Hopefully that will translate into more wins and improved competitiveness in the SEMO Conference next season for the Bearcats.

  • So, South Iron beat School of the Ozarks 64-38, and Advance beat Gideon. I believe South Iron beats Advance by 15+. What do the rest of you semoballers think?

-- Posted by tooldogging on Tue, Mar 3, 2015, at 8:07 PM
  • tooldogging, from what I saw tonight it didn't matter who made it to Van Buren only South iron would be walking off that court with the "W". Advance needs to take it inside more, and be more aggressive. That's all they can do. Seen too many Gideon rebounds(granted Gideon was bigger). Even Coach Wheetley told the Southeast Missourian he wanted more from his boys than they've showed in practice this week. I think he got most of it in the final 4 minutes of the game; which shows they have heart. They'll need it. I'm thinking a 20 point win for South Iron.

-- Posted by semolian on Tue, Mar 3, 2015, at 8:38 PM
  • True dat Semolian, I believe South Iron is on a mission to prove that this is their year. I see one heck of a matchup in the final four in Columbia between SI and undefeated Meadville. I think that the winner of that game is the state champ!

-- Posted by tooldogging on Tue, Mar 3, 2015, at 9:30 PM
  • I have to agree with semolian and tooldogging. I believe South Iron will win by 15-20 points over Advance. Dawson Mayo will have to have a much better game than he did tonight against Gideon. He only scored 5 points I think.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Wed, Mar 4, 2015, at 4:42 PM
  • @Preach wonder why they would move out that far. I know that is closer for Thayer but it is 130 mile for SCC.

I really do not think this game will happen until Friday. The way it looks in Dexter right now is terrible...

-- Posted by westmowa on Wed, Mar 4, 2015, at 5:08 PM
  • From what I'm hearing from a quite reputable media source, the folks in Poplar Bluff were not able to commit that they'd be able to have everything cleared up in time for the game to take place. Makes sense I guess.

Kind of feels more like it was quite a few years back. West Plains, Cabool, etc every year. We've gotten a bit spoiled lately with games being played at Dexter and PB.

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Wed, Mar 4, 2015, at 5:17 PM
  • Good question westmowa. I wondered the same thing. I guess because it's closer for Thayer and Neelyville. Chaffee and SCC just drew the short straw there as far as distance goes. I think FarmBoy06 is right too that the heavy snow we're going to get tonight in Semo makes a game in our area untenable.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Wed, Mar 4, 2015, at 5:41 PM
  • I know it's not southeast Missouri but considering the circumstances of the weather, the rest of the state is still playing. 2nd ranked Barstow and 5th ranked Lafeyette county both won their games tonight and will play each other in the quarterfinals of class 3. Just giving something to talk about.

-- Posted by semolian on Wed, Mar 4, 2015, at 7:35 PM

What if the SEMO teams couldn't play until Friday night, then had to turn around and play a team on Saturday that got to play on Wednesday, or even Thursday....little bit of a disadvantage for the SEMO teams. For instance, C3 sectional game played on Friday night, would have to turn around and play at 1:00 pm on Saturday...talking about short rest, geeeeze!!

  • I wouldn't sell advance short yet, they didn't play to their ability at the sectional game like they did in the district championship. That's the best part about this time of year, no one knows what will happen. Saying a team is going to beat another team just by scores of a previous game that really have no connection doesn't really make sense, that's just my 2 cents.

  • The winner of NM/Charleston plays their quarterfinal game the next night. I guess it would allow them more time to prepare for the next round. It is a an unusual start time, but I think it is a good idea. I am sure both schools agreed to playing at 2:00.

  • If I was in charge of travel for the schools in the sectionals I'd be thinking of making some hotel reservations and just heading up north after the game. Instead of coming back home on a 1-2 hour trip and then heading north on a 2 hour trip the next morning. I don't think I'd want my team being tired from the night before riding a bus 2 hours-which can make some people more tired to play a team thats had a night off. But perhaps thats just me overthinking the situation.

  • Class 3 ship will have to go though Barstow. They are pretty good from top to bottom. Plenty of playoff experience and came up short to a more experienced Ritter team last season. You still have Madison Prep alive and well on that side as well. They will be tested as well as Tolton tomorrow. Tolton does have Porter bros, but its going to take a full team effort to beat Madison. Madison is loaded on the front line and their PG Harris is legit. But we cant forget about the bootheel guys, where Charleston and New Madrid can compete with anyone. Charleston led by Bogan, can he will his team to another victory? They all will have to step up. Can Jimerson get has guys over the hurdle in their first play off run in years? This will be a slug fest and I hate to miss out. Im always rooting for the bootheel, but when it comes to my Blue Jays I have to stick with blood. Good luck to both teams and put on a show for the faithful bootheel fans.

Great win NMCC! Boy that feels nice! Charleston is so hard to beat twice, and especially in March! They are very well coached, and fight until the bitter end. Hats off to them, Coach Farmer, Del and the other seniors. Y'all are young and should be good for years to come, as always.

Eagles you guys played great! Way to find a way to win. And what about Jimerson's icewater freethrows with time expired, man I was sweating. I know he ended up with a career high 53 points, and I believe 28 rebounds to go with that! Everyone played well and contributed. Gonna be a quick turn around for sure, and we practically played a half of another game. But I think they can do it!

Now Sikeston and Cape people, my heart has had enough, don't excite me again like that tonight haha!

Yeah Jimerson finished with 53 points, I had said 51 (that's what the final scoreboard said), but scorebook had 53, I don't think they got his last bucket up on the scoreboard in time.

It was a heck of a performance for sure. And what a class act Del Bogan is, he put on twitter that he thinks Jimerson deserves player of the year. What a tremendous and humble thing to say. I'll def be rooting for and following Jacksonville St. next year!

Congrats to Coach Unterreiner on hopefully his first of many district titles.

  • Wow Dump that is a good slam on Advance. South Iron led the whole game practically and lost on a shot by Advance with 5 seconds to go. If they are vastly overrated then Advance must not be very good either. This is Class 1 not Class 4 or 5. Both teams played their butts off and the outcome could have gone either way.

Very well coached team!! SCC fans, congrats and it was a pleasure meeting you. What a classy program, very impressed to say the least. Good luck to you guys at Mizzou!! We wish you all the best.

To our boys in blue, congrats for becoming the first Valle basketball team to ever make it this far. That is an accomplishment you can never hang your head about. You gave us all a chance to taste a bit of March Madness up close and personal. And more importantly, you provided dreams for future Warrior hoopsters. I personally enjoyed watching many of you approach the SCC players later at the front door and wish them well next week. First class as well. We can't be more proud of you guys!!

Crosshair, thats a magnificent job of reading way too much into my comments. But considering South Iron was the #2 team in Class 1 heading into that game and they failed again to advance past sectionals, yeah they are over rated. I did not diss or slam Advance at all, but even I did, so what?!

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 10:19 AM
  • *

Jolly dump I think you have missed the toilet on this one advance played their butt off and was very fornuant to win that game and rather than critize a team that couldn't get past sectionals might want to appreciate a program that has been that good for so many years in a row I am totally with crosshairs on this one!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 10:43 AM

Congrats to Advance on winning sectionals it was an accomplishment. With that said there were many people posting here about how great South Iron is this year, and lets face it, they were and are over rated. Its happened many years in a row now.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 1:09 PM
  • South iron wasn't over rated they just picked a bad time to not play up to their potential.

-- Posted by ozzyandharriet on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 2:03 PM
  • Single elimination anything can happen. It's not like Advance is a horrible team. They made plays and a huge play at the end. Ste Gen did beat South Iron when Ruble was hurt in a Christmas tourny. Also SG is 4A so if losing to SG makes a 1A school overrated what does that say about SG? Just saying, stop the hate, congratulations Advance!

    -- Posted by lhs06 on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 2:43 PM
  • Any team isn't the same if they lose a starting point guard. Your just a hater bleed green, good day to you sir.

    -- Posted by lhs06 on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 3:09 PM
  • Upsets have been happening since David killed Goliath. It's just part of sports. It doesn't mean one team was overrated or the other underrated. South Iron does have a history of struggling in the postseason for whatever reason. But they did better this year than the last few seasons when they didn't make it out of districts; they made it to the quarterfinals which is nothing to sneeze at. After all, only eight teams in each class make it that far.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 3:23 PM

I did not predict one game this year, but anyone who knows anything should have been able to predict how over rated South Iron is every single year.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 6:52 PM
  • Jolly, I just don't think you can say that a team that makes it to the quarterfinals is overrated.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 9:35 PM
  • *

Answer this question Preacher, is the quarterfinals the state championship game?

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 9:48 PM
  • No, of course not, Jolly. But surely you're not going to argue that only the two teams who make it to the championship game are the only teams that aren't overrated?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 9:59 PM
  • *

I am arguing that when people on this very website made statements like: "South Iron is a great team" and "whoever wins between them and Meadville will be the the state champs" makes South Iron over rated. South Iron was ranked by the media last year and failed to win districts and ranked again in 2011 and failed to win districts. Its par for the course for South Iron to not meet what other people's expectations are.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Sun, Mar 8, 2015, at 10:11 PM
  • *

Jolly south iron lost to the state champs one of those years and SCC lost to that same team and who knows advance may bring a state championship home your bar is way to high IMO!

-- Posted by porchswing on Mon, Mar 9, 2015, at 9:41 AM
  • I do agree with Jolly on one premise. The word "great" gets thrown around too much. Fans are not qualified to decide who's "great" and who's not "great" in my opinion.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Mon, Mar 9, 2015, at 9:47 AM
  • *

Jwhitlock I agree great should be left for a very few but it sounds like jolly has a Axe to grind with a program that has been really good over the past 8 years or so they were in the state championship game in 08 in class 2 1 step away from a final 4 appearance this year lost to a state champion in between has beaten Bernie two years in a row rather easy beaten a class 5 poplar bluff a couple of years in there the big springs and the black river league at the top can play with anybody that program is at a level lately that a lot of programs would kill to be at IMO!

-- Posted by porchswing on Mon, Mar 9, 2015, at 10:01 AM
  • Yes Porch. I agree with all that you have said and I personally think that South Iron is one of the better programs in this area.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Mon, Mar 9, 2015, at 10:26 AM
  • Congrats to SCC on going to the final four yet again. It was a fun game to watch, similar to a college setting with a lot of fans from both schools. Valle fought hard but SCC was too quick. Unbelievably quick on defense, if you didn't protect the ball, it was gone in a blink of an eye. You can force Porter to the left or to the right and it doesn't matter, the kid is gonna score. Someone said they were 1 dimensional...not at all, all those kids were playing tenacious defense and flying all over the place. I believe Valle scared them though, SCC was wearing down at the end of the 3rd qtr but they were still quicker. The SCC fans were great to talk to and both teams and fans respected each other. Good Luck at the final four, i'll be cheering you on.

-- Posted by BBUBET on Mon, Mar 9, 2015, at 10:52 AM
  • I personally watched South Iron play and they are a talented bunch, but I have to agree with Dumpo on this one. South Iron just doesn't meet expectations. Losing in the quarterfinals by 2 points is still a loss. I may have went to HS in Zalma but even I understand that logic.

-- Posted by exzalmanian on Mon, Mar 9, 2015, at 2:10 PM
  • Not real big on the terms overrated or underrated. Look at class 4 district 16. Lafeyette (St. Joseph) was the odds on favorite to win as they were the number one team but also first in state in class 4. They lost in the semis to a team that was 3 games below .500.

Then look to college prep in class 3. Not only beat Cardinal Ritter in the district championship but they beat father Tolten to make it to final 4. They are 17-11 I believe. That's quite impressive. Btw as a side note-father Tolten was one of lafayette(St. Joseph)'s 4 losses. Also why I ate crow when advance lost. Would not have seen that coming compared to watching them play against Gideon. This is why we play the game-and why people like me(and the rest of ya) like to go watch em play the game.

-- Posted by semolian on Mon, Mar 9, 2015, at 2:52 PM
  • I picked NMCC, SCC, and South Iron. 2 out of 3 ain't bad. SI has been the favorite for several years and has choked or played bad or got cheated. Pick your poison. This has happened since the 70's. It's not our coaches fault. People talk up our players as well as our teams and kids buy into that more than other schools do. People here win games before we play them. They put pressure on the kids at a very early age. Expectations are always very high at South Iron every year.
