  • I'm sorry but that is flat out embarrasing that class 4 Dexter has only 10 points at the half. It's bad enough when your playing Sikeston or Charleston but Twin Rivers just makes it worse.

I think Paul Hale would be very prone to drive to the game and give his two cents if he was aware of this.

  • Despite the lop-sided score, from the radio broadcast, it sounds like Dexter's Cole Renken, our 6'3" sophomore center, has played really well amidst the tall trees of Jackson.

NMCC really does have other scorers. They are fairly balanced after Willie. Any of them could have a big night. People just hear Willie, willie, willie and they haven't seen the team. And they are all juniors, so the future is bright.

-- Posted by Champ Kind on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 9:49 PM
  • Uncle Charlie. I would have to both agree and disagree with you about EP. the Tipler kid is a freak (all state material) but as far as there defense and guard play below average I disagree. I was at the game. They had two guards score in double figures. They did turn the ball over a bit but that was only their second game and was coming off a three week layoff due to Snow. They cut it to a 10 pt game toward end of third qrt. Oran is a great team with many weapons. Give ep some time and games and folks better watch out.

    -- Posted by basketball365 on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 9:52 PM
  • Unc you better worry about scc whooping oran Saturday and no he used to live here and recently moved back

-- Posted by yaeger on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 9:55 PM
  • Ep vs Oran was much closer game than final score. Very fun game to watch. Look forward to seeing more of both the Scott miss teams. Oran did not miss in first half.

    -- Posted by basketball365 on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 9:57 PM
  • I don't know if the Tipler kid is all state. Every one of his points besides maybe 5 came off offensive rebounds and that's only because Oran is a bad rebounding team. He was useless away from the basket and not once did he put it on the ground to get to the hole. East Prairie will improve I think but I haven't seen a worse shooting team all year.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 9:58 PM
  • Thanks for playing yaeger.

Oran was up by double digits the whole game. I don't know what your considering a close game.

there is no way this Dexter team wins against P'ville. What has happened to this team? This is beyond a down year!

  • Wow, if Charlie is this mad after a 17 point win, I'm gunna hate to see him after a 35 point loss on Saturday.

-- Posted by Champ Kind on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 10:06 PM
  • Preacher. Renken looks like he could be a good one as time moves on. Strong and athletic. He should have a bright future.

-- Posted by IndianPride on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 10:06 PM
  • They're certainly off to a slow start for sure. But look who they've played! Charleston, Twin Rivers, and Jackson are not exactly slouches! Portageville is 0-2, so they're not exactly roaring out of the gate either. I agree though that Dexter will have to play much better to beat them in the X-Mas Tourney.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 10:09 PM
  • I will be definitely upset if Oran allows SCC to beat them by 35. A 35 point victory is a irrational guess to say the least. Not mad, just implying a lot of work needs to be done. Sorry me or majority of Oran's fans are not happy about a 17 point win. That might be why we've had winning seasons the past 4 years opposed to years past.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 10:10 PM
  • A 17 point win when we didn't play our best. I'm sorry, should have worded that better.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 10:11 PM
  • I don't know how around 30pts 15 rebounds and 5 blocks isn't a state caliber. And all I'm saying is that EP is on the rise. And how are they the worst shooting team but score 68 Pts Oran's d must need work too, But they sure can score.

    -- Posted by basketball365 on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 10:13 PM
  • Oran beat SCC by 30 3 times last year and now it's a rumor SCC might beat them by 30 a year later. The beauty of high school basketball.

SCC 76, Oran 68 is my unbiased predicition.

  • Oran's a bad rebounding team and doesn't match up with Tipler is why. 15 rebounds translated into 10-15 points.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Tue, Dec 17, 2013, at 10:19 PM
  • Well the rebounds didn't fall in his lap due to Oran being a bad rebounding team. Come on unc the kid is a freak athlete that has skills.

  • Uncle Charlie I think you need to study up on your basketball.. Oran rebounds the ball well from what I've seen.. They all crash the boards.. Maybe East Prairie is pretty good and you should give someone besides Oran some credit.

For all you debating the Oran and SCC matchup .. It could go either way but if SCC plays defense and crashes the boards like they did last night against Advance don't be surprised to see a lopsided score up there in SCCs favor.

-- Posted by olediehard on Wed, Dec 18, 2013, at 8:36 PM
  • uncle Charlie only cares about oran according to him they cannot be beat they beat SCC by 30+ 3 times last year as he keeps referring

  • Ill be stunned if the game is within 20. This isn't last years SCC, go ask Advance.

-- Posted by Champ Kind on Wed, Dec 18, 2013, at 8:56 PM
  • From what I heard Oran played sub par last night at EP but when's it time to step up and say maybe that's the level they'll play at all year. No disrespect to oran because they have a good team but its not last year anymore.

-- Posted by olediehard on Wed, Dec 18, 2013, at 9:01 PM

-- Posted by playdeep on Wed, Dec 18, 2013, at 9:55 PM
  • Oran shot the ball pretty darn well against EP. I wouldn't say it was an off night for Oran. What should they have done better uncle Charlie? I would give Ep a ton of credit were credit is due. Once they get some games under their belt they will do just fine. Just u wait and see.

    SCC takes Oran by 15

    -- Posted by basketball365 on Wed, Dec 18, 2013, at 10:17 PM
  • I don't think scc will beat oran by 30. It will be a hard fought game on both sides. But I think oran will win. Come watch the game it will be good. Just a reminder oran beat advance 80 to 53

-- Posted by the three omegos on Wed, Dec 18, 2013, at 10:21 PM
  • Just a reminder, SCC had Advance down 40 at half and won by 48. If they would have left their starters in they could have won by 70.

-- Posted by Champ Kind on Wed, Dec 18, 2013, at 10:37 PM
  • Olediehard, East Prairie is anything but pretry good. Oran has yet to play a team that challenges them on the boards. Oran couldn't keep one person (Tipler) off the boards last night. I hate to see how they rebound against 5 players from SCC crashing the boards. As far as defense, any realitively smart person that's been around high school basketball the past 5-10 years knows 68 points against East Prairie is equilivant to 90+ let up against SCC. If Oran shoots well (I think they will) it will more than likely be a ballgame. If not, it's doubtful.

Basketball, Oran allowed over 60 points last night which by my standards is too much against East Prairie's personnel regardless of someone's opinion on their talent and really any team if your capable.

Yaeger, that's false as I maybe two days ago gave my score.

I'm not one to say SCC's going to turbo clock a likely 20 win Oran team because they smashed a beat up Advance team on their first home game of the year along with Banks' returning even though it's plausible.

  • Eminence is the champs of Class 1 until somebody dethrones them. They beat South Iron and SCC last year. This year they lost to Class 3, 3rd ranked Liberty at Liberty by 3. Should be a exciting year to see who comes out. It's between them 3 teams.

  • Oran/Bernie should be a good game even though it honestly means nothing but bragging rights unless they match up in the postseason which is unlikely at this point IMO.

One thing Bernie has that Oran doesn't is a post presence but Oran has some of the beat guard play around. Bernie's depth should be able to contain Oran's guards with up tempo pressure, enough anyways for Ellenburg to have a decent game and be the deciding factor for Bernie winning.

This Bernie team never has played in the Show Me Center for a regular season game or in front of how many ever people will be there whereas Oran is coming off playing 3-4 games there not even 3 weeks prior and experiencing the pressure of a deep postseason run. Bernie will have to handle the pressure to play effectively.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Thu, Dec 19, 2013, at 3:00 PM
  • Good point Uncle. Oran will definitely benefit from playing more games in the facility. But I still think Bernie will win by more than 10.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Thu, Dec 19, 2013, at 3:18 PM
  • Unc I know we've been jabbing at each other but I'm like you this bernie team has never played in the show me center and that can effect a lot of things especially shooting. As far as playing in front of big crowds they have played in packed gyms like dtstricts at Bloomfield and at trcc against winona last year. I for once am not saying anything who will win but we do have depth, we will pressure you, our guards can shoot, and Ellenburg as a jr has been unstoppable so far. I also don't know much about this oran team but I think this game will be special for both teams and im looking forward to it

  • After watching Hayti dismantle Holcomb tonight. They are even more athletic than I originally thought. But I do think if someone can win the turnover battle and actually block out to keep them off the glass then they can win. It will definitely require both of those to beat Hayti, but it's definitely possible.

Ah that is true Bird! First year for SEMO Conference.

I will take your word for it Dustin, like I said I haven't attended the tournament. I do believe that NMCC could compete with and in my opinion beat any team in it this year. I do wish they would get in a steady Chrustmas tournament, wherever that may be.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Sat, Dec 21, 2013, at 11:05 PM
  • I would seed NMCC No. 1 this year at the event Buck.

Nope honestly no idea Preacher. I was wondering the same thing myself a few weeks back. Although I wasn't overly impressed with that tournament. Iv attended it before where the people I brought with me numbered about half the fans in attendance. I'll see what I can find out.

  • And last year.

  • If you start adding too many large schools you end up with first round games like they have at the Show Me Center every year.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Dec 21, 2013, at 11:09 PM
  • Even if NMCC was in it this year, I would still have Kennett #1 and Hayti #2, then NMCC and Bernie.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Dec 21, 2013, at 11:11 PM
  • I disagree Dustin, esp. if Bloomfield decided not to invite back some of the schools who just haven't been competitive in a while, like Richland or Van Buren. I think it would make the field better overall.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Dec 21, 2013, at 11:14 PM
  • If Hayti can beat NMCC I think they will win the Class 2 state title this season. I think they might win it anyways.

Did you live in Stoddard County during Richland's prime? It was among the most special environments in tournament history. I'm a traditionalist. I just don't think schools that close to Bloomfield should be sent packing. History suggests Richland will be the No. 1 seed again someday.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Dec 21, 2013, at 11:18 PM
  • That's like saying let's kick Bell City out of the tournament at the Show Me Center. I remember when Bell City beat Charleston at the finals at Cape Girardeau.

The irony of that game was that BC's big man was a Charleston native who grew up with all of Charleston's players. Both BC and Charleston went on to play for state championships, that year. Charleston won Class 3 state championship and BC was defeated by Jefferson for the Class 1 championship.

-- Posted by birdfan on Sat, Dec 21, 2013, at 11:37 PM
  • The Class 1 schools cannot go play an out-of-state Christmas Tournament. They belong where they are as long as they want to be there.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Dec 21, 2013, at 11:44 PM
  • When I was in high school at Kelly back in the 80's, I remember Richland having some pretty good teams, but that was a long time ago. Whether or not they've been really good since then, I couldn't say as I lived in the St. Louis area for a decade. Teams like Richland and Bell City are great about once every 20 years or so, but more often than not, they struggle.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sun, Dec 22, 2013, at 12:28 AM
  • Richland won the state title in the 90's Preacher. I think they were the No. 1 seed two years in a row at Bloomfield but I'd have to check the records which are still boxed up since I moved to Dexter.

I can remember when Kelly was good enought to eliminate Bernie from the state playoffs when Paul Hale was the coach at Bernie.

Vandiver for Bloomfield is a rising star. He's a sophomore, and probably the most athletic kid I've seen in awhile. Remember his name. Very entertaining game!!! #1

-- Posted by yaeger on Sun, Dec 22, 2013, at 11:02 AM
  • Seriously, bringing in NMCC or/and Caruthersville would bring more competition as well as money to the Bloomfield tournament. However who would Bloomfield truly get rid of? You have to think Van Buren being a far drive doesn't bring much fans as well as a depth of competition as NMCC nor Caruthersville would. East prairie hasn't made much noise either in the tournament that I can remember. To be honest, let the SEMO tournament have NMCC as its the bigger school tournament (most years), and Advance in the BCT would bring some great competition most years. It did when they played there before.

-- Posted by Hightops on Sun, Dec 22, 2013, at 11:53 AM
  • Dustin, I have no information along that line, just playing the "what if" game. Coach Smith of Caruthersville said on another thread on another thread on Semoball that he is trying to get a Christmas tournament started down there next year. But since neither NMCC or Caruthersville is in a Christmas tourney this year, it seemed to me to be a timely discussion of the possibility of both teams playing at Bloomfield.

I'd have to look up the numbers for the last seven years.

I know I'm probably in the large minority, but I don't really care for the gym at Bloomfield. I have certain spots I like to sit at at a basketball game, and that is right on the court. I don't see the best. So personally I'm not a big fan of gym where you can't sit on the court instead of being raised above (Bloomfield/Risco, etc.)

You seem as confident as me. I'll go ahead and tell the story. Bernie played somebody in a district somewhere up north when I was between 5 and 10. My parents told me if Bernie won the first round game I could go to the semifinal. I listened to the first half on the radio. Bernie had a comfortable lead but its opponent rallied to pull off the upset in the second half while I was sleeping. 75 percent sure they won it in overtime. I found out the next morning. Confident Bernie was a No. 3 seed in the district but cannot remember where it was played about 20 years ago.

I do know when Bernie scheduled Kelly in the regular season it always had problems beating them. Not sure, but wouldn't be surprised if Kelly won more often. Kelly had good teams when Hale was at Bernie.

This entire conversation started because Preacher Man said he went to Kelly.

  • The Notre Dame one or two-point district championship win against Bernie at Bloomfield a couple weeks after Bernie won by a similiar score at home in the regualr season was probably within three years of the Bernie first-round upset loss against I think Kelly or someone else if yaeger is right.

Richland may have one of the best JV's in the SCAA this season. History suggests every program goes up and down from time to time.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sun, Dec 22, 2013, at 7:59 PM
  • The Richland JV played Dexter to 14 points. Dexter played the Jackson JV to one. Jackson won the Notre Dame JV Tournament, which has most of the SEMO Conference schools in it.

  • Small schools deserve respect. Some of them only have basketball. Richland has been in the tournament since 1961. They have finished in the Top 6 10 times. Their crowds are likely unprecedented during most of these years. I don't get a vote, but replacing Richland with NMCC or Caruthersville is not right in my opinion.

Tried the last two years and was told Cville was on a list and several teams would have to drop out because their are other teams a head of us. So we are going to start our own Christmas Tournament next year. New Madrid will be in it. There are a couple of other bootheel teams that are currently in other Christmas tournaments this year that are going to be in it...Less travel time to stay in the bootheel......as well as some big name teams from Tenn, Akansas, and Illinois. • Dustin and jaeger. You both are right and wrong regarding the Bernie-Kelly matchups. So there is no need for the urinating contest. A simple check of the Southeast Missourian archives from google helped me find the following:

1985 Bernie 78 Kelly 70 in district semis

1987 Bernie 72 Kelly 61 in district semis

    1994 Kelly 73- Bernie 62 regular season

    1995 Bernie 83 Kelly 66 regular season

    1996 Kelly 63 Bernie 60 regular season

    1997 Bernie 79 Kelly 65 regular season

    1998 Kelly 90 Bernie 61 regular season

That's the last time they have played . Again, during the 1994 season Bernie was upset in first round of district by Scott city 85-84. So that may be the game you are thinking of Dustin. Yaeger, Bernie was 2-3 against Kelly in the 90's.

    1999 Kelly 66 Bernie 65 regular season

-- Posted by Slim shady on Mon, Dec 23, 2013, at 6:02 AM
  • Correction-- Bernie was 2-4 versus Kelly in the 90's.

They met just one other time before then. In 1971, Bernie beat Kelly 55-53 in the district semis.

As is happens with all humans, when we get further removed from the actual events, our memories can play tricks on us.

Google news archives helped me refresh mine. So to make nice, Dustin and Yaeger, you were both correct. Bernie never lost to Kelly in district play, but Kelly put some losses on Bernie in the 90's. Thanks also 6+4+3+2 for your input.

  • Well I for one am glad to hear that Caruthersville will host a tournament next Christmas if they can't get in at Bloomfield or Cape. NMCC will be a good addition. Wonder if Sikeston will be invited too or will the continue to play up at St. Dominic's in St. Louis? Also TIDAL, will it be an 8-team or a 16-team field?

As for food and drink in the gym, I'm for that too, but really can't blame Caruthersville for not allowing it. A couple of our church members are janitors at Bloomfield and last season they were often at the gym until 2 a.m. cleaning up the gym. A couple of nights last year at the BCT I was one of the last people out of the gym and you would not believe the mess. If people would just clean up after themselves it wouldn't be such an issue.

-- Posted by rocketsbro on Mon, Dec 23, 2013, at 2:01 PM
  • I think it would be acording how good the out of state teams are. The teams that are in the St. Dom tourney aren't really that great and better competion would benefit them more than the way games are called.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Mon, Dec 23, 2013, at 2:33 PM
  • Sikeston is doing just fine with their current Christmas tournament arrangement. As much as I would like for Sikeston to play in the Cape tourney, they already play those teams (ie SEMO Conference). With this current tournament, we see some good teams and different style of officiating. I'm not sure officiating is the main reason they are going to St Dom, however. Getting to see good St Louis teams is the biggest reason.

  • Sorry...I didnt realize we had to do a press release. When we get it all togethor, I send the details along with the list of teams with you.

I only mention New Madrid because thats a sure deal. They will be in it. As for the other teams...they are currently in other Christmas Tournaments....so I rather not mention their names....

We are going to start with 8 teams. Our goal is to get 8 good to very good teams....quality over quanity. We want to get some bootheel teams as well as teams from out of state. Most coaches would like to play teams that they dont see on their schedule, in conference or district tournaments...

We would love to get Sikeston...I think they are happy with what they are doing.

We are looking at a couple of teams out of Memphis, and a team from St. Louis. Is really up in the air right now.

We are not trying to compete with Bloomfield or Cape. They both have awesome tournaments. We are just trying to bring a tournament to the bootheel that represents southeast Missouri and the tri-state area.

I got your email address....Your be the first to know....
