High School Basketball Forum: Oran Invitational

Posted by Uncle Charlie on Sun, Dec 1, 2013, at 8:14 PM:

Thoughts? Predictions? Lets hear it.

I'm looking at an Oran/SCC final with SCC not whiping the floor but pulling off a single digit hard fought victory.

Chaffee/SCC will be a good game but SCC is more prepared than any other team in the field at this point in the season just like every other year coming into the tournament right after the Riverbend. Chaffee takes 3rd over Malden.

Oran/Malden is a sleeper game with potential to shake up the whole field but I think as long as Oran avoids a track meet and contains the ball, they should be alright.

Advance/Malden will be a great first round match-up especially with Below/Dobbinz squaring off and Halford squaring off against his former team first game of the year. Advance turbo clocks the whole losers bracket on the way to winning consolation.

Top Players (in no order):

Seth Ressel - Oran

Hunter Schlosser - Oran

Peyton Montgomery - Chaffee

Trevor Morehead - Chaffee

Charlie Montgomery- Chaffee

Jeffrey Porter - SCC

Kendall Blissett - SCC

Juwuan Owens - SCC

Cortez Dobbinz - Malden

Lane Below - Advance

  • Is Owens one of the move ins?

  • Yes, only one I remembered that had any significance in the game. The rest was done by the Porter/Blissett combination.

  • Dustin feels obligated to take the "closer" team 9 out of 10, possibly 10 out of 10 times no matter the circumstances and he's not a Oran fan which is perfect too me.

When a team typicalky finishes 6-16 on the year, IT IS NOT A HISTORIC SEASON if they finish the year 13-9 and get beat out in the semi-finals of districts IMO.

    OIT Finals tomorrow

    Consolation at 5pm

    3rd place at 6:30

    Championship at 8pm

Below was maybe 50%. Could shoot when open but not able to create anything.

-- Posted by Larry Doby on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 9:10 PM
  • Advance loses that game even with below at 100%. Advance was outmatched and out coached.

-- Posted by BLARNEY CARNEY on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 9:16 PM
  • Did Chaffee win or lose?

    -- Posted by joefrank78 on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 9:46 PM
  • Turbo clock win for the Eagles which is about what I expected with Below's current status but I agree 100% BC. Oran shot horrid from the field and charity stripe also but quickness and defense is something that never fails you. This team is more fun to watch than last years IMO. With their new uniforms and playing style, it's almost liking watching Duke play on television. After observing, I think if Oran shoots better than they did tonight (I think they will), I think they'll be OIT champs for the first time in over 50 years.

In regards to Shoemaker, he's an elite coach in the area IMO when it comes down to X's, O's and playing to your personnel. I would not want any other coach on the sideline for my team when it comes gut-check time.

On a side note, I would say the 2 best players in this tournament from what I've seen so far are Seth Ressel and Cortez Dobbins.

  • OK. Thanks, Larry.

    -- Posted by joefrank78 on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 9:52 PM
  • Advance couldnt hit anything in first quarter if below was able to play at 100% would have been close game. I think uncle charlie is in for rude awakening scc will win gm. How many times do we have to do this every year about how someone is going to beat scc, never happens. Scc got called for every hand check and was able to adjust in 2nd half.

    -- Posted by hawk85 on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 9:59 PM
  • I can promise you Oran is not better than last years team.

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:00 PM
  • I agree with that and scc is better than last yr plus little birdy told me banks might be cleared tommorow.

    -- Posted by hawk85 on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:09 PM
  • You are smoking something potent hawk85. If Below could have put up maybe 50, you might be right. Oran I can promise you shot AT LEAST 20% lower than Advance did in the game and Oran is without a doubt the best shooting team in the tournament. Oran beat SCC last year in the Christmas tournament after I predicted it and some wise cracker from Charleston basically said the same thing you said. SCC had a .500 season last year and had more than 5 losses 2 seasons ago so they've been beat in the past couple years believe it or not but your entitled to your opinion.

Oran went from having an all-state post player to having someone who is lucky to come away with 5 points in a game so I agree 100%.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:09 PM
  • Hawk, I heard Banks will not be back any time soon from some realiable sources. It's SCC so who knows. Otto might end up suiting up tomrorrow.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:11 PM
  • And uu think oran is some kind of power house, please.

And lets make alittle wager who shot worse % not even

Close. And lets start calling oran by its new name kelly west!!

    -- Posted by hawk85 on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:14 PM
  • Oran is a power house in class 2? Go look on someone's palm pilot who keeps stats if your that positive. I can't help it your school's athletic program has went down the drain to the extent your incorporating new sports.

"You can go too Oran or Kelly, little Johny." What do you think he's going to say?

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:21 PM
  • They dont have choice when they live in benton but then agian u can work the system.

Lets see easier to win in smaller class maybe thats the reason or maybe just oran school system higher ranked than kelly, not!

    -- Posted by hawk85 on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:33 PM
  • Anybody have the scores of these games?

    -- Posted by waw1981 on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:37 PM
  • Or maybe Kelly hasn't beaten Oran in a varsity contest since the '06 season. True story by the way.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:38 PM
  • I personally believe that the SCC and Oran game will be close. In fact I'm calling Oran by 5, but if SCC had Banks I'd pick them to win.

-- Posted by Sydney Crosby on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:39 PM
  • Hope the game gets plyed tommorow so we have more to talk about.

    -- Posted by hawk85 on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:45 PM
  • 1 final 4 in 30 something years and now ur a power house.

  • Fish aren't biting no more hawk.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 10:52 PM
  • Kelly beat Oran in baseball 2 years ago.. unless your comment was strictly for basketball. They also beat Chaffee that year. Both wins were with Householder.

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Wed, Dec 4, 2013, at 11:55 PM
  • Oran won the tournament in 1972 I believe. It hasn't quite been 50 years

-- Posted by BLARNEY CARNEY on Thu, Dec 5, 2013, at 3:48 AM
  • I don't know what game you watched but Oran shot well from the field but not so great from the free throw line.

-- Posted by olediehard on Thu, Dec 5, 2013, at 8:53 AM
  • I think it is kind of silly arguing over whose shooting percentage was lower. Neither team looked great offensively throughout the game, however I think in the end Oran shot a little better.

The first half was terrible for both teams. Advance looked like they forgot to bring their offense all together. Outside of the opening minute or so where they knocked down a couple of 3s, Oran wasn't much better. However, their early success from behind the arc tempted them into hunting for more outside shots. They were still getting open looks, but they just couldn't knock anything else down.

The second half was what really separated the teams. Advance still couldn't get anything going. Below didn't play much (if at all) and nobody stepped up to help fill his shoes. Oran, on the other hand, shot the ball better starting with the fact they were able to get some easy buckets in transition. What really helped them though was that they (Ressel especially) began attacking Advance's 1-3-1 zone instead of passing it around for a 3pt attempt.

-- Posted by Crash Davis on Thu, Dec 5, 2013, at 10:54 AM
  • Almost like watching Duke?

-- Posted by CatDad on Thu, Dec 5, 2013, at 11:18 AM
  • Are we still talking about a 30 point blowout?!?! I guy would think that it went into double overtime..wow

-- Posted by Sports guy on Thu, Dec 5, 2013, at 11:33 AM
  • I'm talking just basketball fallsohard. Oran shot way worse from the charity stripe than the field, no arguement here but still did not have the beat shooting game from the field especially from behind the arc in the first half.

Until someone finds the capability and intelligence to make Oran beat you from the inside which will eventually happen this year (the reason why I don't think they'll go to state), it will be another fun season.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Thu, Dec 5, 2013, at 11:48 AM
  • It will be tough to trap Oran into making you beat them from the inside. Shoemaker is too smart to fall into such a situation. Oran has the ability to attack the basket with its 1-4 players. The post game really needs improvement, I wont argue that, but they are capable of playing with just about anyone.

-- Posted by BLARNEY CARNEY on Thu, Dec 5, 2013, at 11:58 AM
