  • The Bernie/Cooter game was very close. Cooter's Bridges allowed 2 hits, while Bernie's Skelton allowed 4. Bernie made 2 errors allowing both runs to score, Cooter made an error allowing the Mule run to score.

The Fall Classic (11 teams) will start Monday at 4 different sites, the tournament bracket will be published late Wed./early Thursday. The 1st 3 seeds, sites are set (Cooter, Bernie, Holcomb), with the 4th being determined after Tuesday's games around the league.

  • A big percentage of the 1A/2A, some 3A schools that don't play football play fall baseball. In the Southeast we have about 25 schools. You have the same rules that you have in the spring. Basically we try to do spring training in the fall.

  • 25 schools ? Really didn't know that many schools played in fall.

  • How long does the fall baseball season last? Is it just for schools that don't have football?

Fall baseball does seem interesting. Do they do a tournament or anything with it? And is it sanctioned by MSHSAA or is it an outside entity?

There is an 11-team tourney which begins next week. MSHSAA does not sanction fall baseball, just like spring softball.

One argument I believe should be made is the softball playoffs should take place in the spring, not the fall.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Thu, Sep 22, 2011, at 1:40 PM
  • Over 100 schools do not participate in the softball playoffs because they are scheduled in the fall. Most teams in the Bootheel cannot support a talented volleyball and softball team in the fall. Therefore, most schools do not offer fall softball, but do play softball in the spring.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Thu, Sep 22, 2011, at 1:43 PM
  • There are also many schools in the Poplar Bluff that do play fall softball that do not have fall volleyball teams.

  • Bernie's Trover threw a 3 hit shutout in this game I believe.

  • The fall tournament should be a good one to finish the season but Cooter has to be the clear favorite!

  • HitandRun

Perhaps. But Bernie suffered a 2-0 loss to Cooter. Holcomb has also played Cooter close at times this season.

How healthy is your pitching staff heading into this week? Any injuries?

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Fri, Sep 23, 2011, at 6:08 PM
  • Preacher Roe Tournament in West Plains

Cooter 6 Dora 3- Brandon Bridges the winner

Cooter 8 Mt.Home, Ar. 2-Dustin Smith the winner

Cooter 5 Naylor 3-Chase Walker the winner

Cooter now 16-3 for the fall.

Wildcat pitching was very good. Taylor Tolson will go against either North Pemiscot or Southland in Monday's 1st round fall classic game.. Anderson's rehab will not be over for 6 weeks. According to the specialist, should be ready and good as new this spring. Just have to wait and see.

    Twin Rivers 6 Naylor 5

    Twin Rivers 0 Seymour 2

Twin Rivers 3 Mt. Home, Ar. 2

Naylor was playing Williford when we left.

How would you compare the teams out there to the teams around here?

The three losses are to South Pemiscot and who else?

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Sep 24, 2011, at 6:41 PM
  • Losses to Clearwater and Greenville. The OFC is loaded with good teams. Twin Rivers, Neelyville, Naylor, all very solid teams. With the new bats, you're only as good as your pitching and defense will take you. Most of the teams will have just about the same number of hits, the walks and errors are usually the culprits for your losses.

  • Bernie finished 15 - 4.

-- Posted by BBfanatic on Sat, Sep 24, 2011, at 10:03 PM
  • I've seen at least five teams that have a chance to to win a big game in the 11-team tourney this week.

One has to wonder if weather will push the opening-round to Tuesday.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Sep 24, 2011, at 11:41 PM
  • It's about the same, most all the schools we've seen have one very good pitcher who can shut you down. Over the years the I-70 conference seems to have been the strongest. Most of their players play Legion or Elite ball during the summer to develop thier talent. There are no easy outs or double digit strike out totals which creates pressure on the other teams defense.

  • There are over 400 teams that do participate in the MSHSAA softball playoffs, usually broken down evenly (around 100 teams per class - 1A through 4A). I would like to see every school that has a softball program have the opportunity to play in the State playoffs. Personally, I feel that if the State playoffs for volleyball were moved to the spring, you would probably get quite a few of the 1A-2A schools interested in starting a volleyball program. This would likely raise the number of school participating in both sports. So my question to MSHSAA is, "Have you ever seen a volleyball game rained out?" Since softball moved from spring to fall there have been far less rainouts/snowouts and better weather to play/watch the games. How many cold days or rainouts do you see in High School baseball? Again there's another point, wouldn't it be better to play the baseball playoffs in the fall too? The problem is not with us small schools willing to move softball/baseball to the fall and volleyball to the spring, it's the large schools who have the big money and can influence the decision making.
