Brian Rosener is the keeper of the Semoball Cup which is presented to the school with the most successful season. It is based on a formula that takes into account the combined winning percentage of all sports teams plus bonus points for advancement in postseason play for both teams and individuals. The bonus points are divided by the number of teams a school fields. Rosener has been the sports editor for the Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Mo. since December 2001. He was born and raised in St. Louis, where he attended Lindbergh High School and Webster University. He is married to Jennifer, a Poplar Bluff native, has a son Jack and a dog named Satchel who stands in for his @semoballBrian photo.

It's the first night of the MSHSAA Class 5 District 1 tournament here in Poplar Bluff.

Last night at Fox High School in the quarterfinals, Seckman beat Hillsboro 63-53 on the girls side while Seckman beat Hillsboro in the boys game, 69-62.

Tonight's game feature the girls with Cape Central (16-7) against Seckman (13-13) up first, followed by Poplar Bluff (16-8) against Jackson (17-6).

FINAL: Cape Central 53, Seckman 41

Sadie Pittman scored 18 and Chelsea Pannier added 13 for the Lady Tigers (17-7), who advanced to the final for the second straight year. Paige Smith added eight points while Farrah Malik and Crystal Vinson each chipped in seven.

Marissa Lehnig scored 21 to lead Seckman (13-14), which pulled within two at the start of the fourth quarter before Central pulled away.

FINAL: Poplar Bluff 45, Jackson 42

Ruthie Johnson's 3-pointer from the corner broke a tie with 12 seconds to go as the Lady Mules held on, advancing to the finals for the second straight year.

Johnson scored 17, Dennisha Rice added nine and Chelsea Darnell chipped in seven off the bench for the Lady Mules (17-8).

Jackson was led by Kaylen Knepp and Conner King, who each scored 11. Brooke Sanders added 10 for Jackson (17-7).

Thursday night it will be the boys turn as the host Mules face Seckman at 6 p.m. followed by Cape Central and Jackson.

Do you know if Cape Central's center is going to play against Jackson. Do you think they will keep this information secret until gametime?
