Missourian prep softball roundup, Apr. 4: Scott City routs Delta, 13-0, at home

Scott City dominated both sides of the ball on Tuesday night, and after a seven-run second inning, the Rams cruised to a 13-0 victory against the visiting Delta Bobcats.

The win makes the third consecutive for Scott City, with the three-game stretch comprised of 46 runs scored for the Rams to just five runs allowed – a +41 scoring margin.

“I thought we came out really good in the first inning,” Rams coach Alexis Atchley said. “They did put a bunt on us first play of the game, but we came back and we got the outs and then we did what we needed to do in the bottom half of the inning, scoring those first couple of runs and getting on top.”

Teriana Crowden, Addison Nichols and Presley Holweg all recorded one hit each for the Bobcats, with the team finishing with just three hits on the night. Jolie Scherer and Olivia Wagoner both finished with walks, reaching base for Delta.

Mackenzie Lawless proved a two-way threat for the Rams in the win, dominating both phases of the game. As the starting pitcher for Scott City, she threw 5.0 innings while striking out 10 batters, raising her season total to 48, while allowing just three hits and two walks in a five-inning shutout win.

At the dish, Lawless finished as one of just three Rams with a multi-hit performance against the Bobcats, recording two hits and an RBI while scoring twice.

“[Lawless has] always been a consistent person,” Atchley said. “That's why she's in that leadoff spot. She's one of those players that put the ball in play. She hits the ball hard and makes things happen. She’s definitely stepped up as our go-to pitcher, and she's done very well.”

Aside from Lawless, Avarie O’Brien and Graycie Conklin both recorded two-hit games while Olivia Ponder game-high four RBIs came with a three-run home run, her first of the season.

“We're trying to find a lineup, and I've liked what we’ve gone with,” Atchley said. “We have a few other girls that kind of come in and out of the lineup as well, but overall I thought we did a really good job offensively.”

Scott City next hosts Oak Ridge (1-2) at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while Delta next hosts Meadow Heights (0-2) on Thursday.

Oak Ridge 20, Leopold 4

Oak Ridge (1-2) earned its first win of the season with a whopping 15-run fifth inning, pushing the Bluejays to a 20-4 win against visiting Leopold (1-5).

“We really grew up on the field tonight, and we really started to execute what we have been working on,” Bluejays coach Jim Simpson said. “It’s really paying off.”

Zoe Berry and Madalyn Schemel both finished with three hits a piece in the win for Oak Ridge. On the mound, Kinsley Bogenpohl pitched four innings while only surrendering one run.

Oak Ridge next plays at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Scott City (5-3), while Leopold next plays at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Woodland (2-3).
