Missourian prep baseball roundup, Mar. 20: Jackson sweeps pool play in Troy tourney

After a lopsided win against Troy-Buchanan yesterday, the Jackson boys’ baseball team finished pool play perfectly with 10-0 and 9-3 wins against Fort Zumwalt North and Hannibal respectively.

Henley Parker finished with two hits in the first win, finishing as the only Indian with multiple hits against Fort Zumwalt North. Caden Bogenpohl’s one hit helped him to a game-high three RBIs.

Junior John-Paul Sauer pitched a scoreless five innings, going hitless and without a walk on the mound, recording seven strikeouts in the process. Sauer finished two hit-by-pitches from a perfect game.

In the second game of the day, Jackson took a 9-3 win against Hannibal using a six-hit, eight-walk offensive effort while drawing four hit-by-pitches.

Indian seniors Jack Wyatt and Baden Hackworth both finished with one-hit, two-RBI statlines to commandeer Jackson to another big win on the road, while starter Kaden Kendle’s 4.0 innings pitched on two hits, a walk and one earned run helped to start the Indians off strong on defense.

Bell City 9, Leopold 4

Bell City opened its season up with a dominant win against Leopold, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to exit a 4-all tie and win at home, 9-4, on Monday.

Sophomore Baylor Eftink led the Cubs’ offense on Monday, finishing with three runs scored, two hits, an RBI and two walks. Junior Easton Newell finished with another two runs scored, two hits and an RBI in the win.

Freshman pitcher Kale Richardson pitched 4.1 innings for the Cubs, striking out eight while going hitless and allowing four walks and an earned run. After going to the bullpen, Bell City junior Logan Stubenrauch pitched 2.2 innings of three-hit ball with zero earned runs, striking out two batters along the way and earning the win.

Senior Connor Ritter led the Wildcats on offense, finishing with one run scored, one hit and two RBIs. Klete Beel and James Engelen both tallied one hit and one RBI in the loss.

Bell City next plays at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Advance, while Leopold next hosts Chaffee (1-0) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

St. Vincent 8, Fredericktown 4

St. Vincent opened its season up on a high note on Monday, defeating Fredericktown 8-4 at home courtesy of a seven-run stretch between the third and fourth innings.

Trevor Moonier led the Indians' offense in the win, finishing with a team-high two runs, two hits and drawing a walk. Senior Blake Monier started the game for St. Vincent, pitching 5.0 innings while allowing six hits, two walks and zero earned runs.

St. Vincent next hosts Delta (0-1) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

East Prairie 3, Meadow Heights 0

East Prairie began its 2023 campaign with a 3-0 victory at home against Meadow Heights on Monday, striking for two runs in the third inning en route to a low-scoring victory.

The Meadow Heights offense worked six walks on the day but remained hitless after seven innings, going scoreless in the game. Junior Ransom Grindstaff earned the loss, allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs while recording six strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched.

Meadow Heights next hosts Oak Ridge at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Ste. Genevieve 11, Perryville 3

Perryville (1-1) fought late but came up short after seven runs across the first three innings doomed the Pirates.

Senior Dane Lauck finished as the Pirates’ leader offensively, scoring two runs and notching two hits in the loss. Troy O’Keefe, Logan Hoehn and Caleb Triller all recorded one-hit, one-RBI performances for Perryville.

The Pirates next host Park Hills Central (2-0) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
