SIKESTON — It was all Notre Dame in an 8-0 win over Sikeston at the Sports Complex on Monday, Oct. 17.

Notre Dame (13-6-1), the eighth-ranked team in Class 3 in the latest Missouri High School Soccer Coaches Association’s latest power rankings, finished with a huge advantage in time of possession and shots on goals over Sikeston (7-12).

“Sikeston is a well-organized team, so it took us a little while to get going,” said Notre Dame coach Matt Vollink. “But once that first goal happened the pieces fell into place more. They worked hard on defense but we worked hard to create a lot of chances. It’s important to stick to the game plan. Our boys did that very well tonight and finished some great goals.”

Will Dodson, the program's all-time goal scorer, finished the game with five goals.

“[Dodson] works unbelievably hard,” Vollink said. “Not only does he create good goals, but also good opportunities for his teammates.”

Bryce Sides added two goals, Hayes Evans scored a goal on a penalty kick, Cole Bruenderman had two assists and Will Thurston had one assist.

Sikeston had some positive moments in the first half, but after trailing 4-0 at halftime, things snowballed for the team in the second half.

“I just tried to remind the players, especially the seniors that they’re only going to have so many chances to be on this field,” said Sikeston coach Gabe Dement. “It wasn’t a harsh negative message, but there is a lesson to be learned in every match played. They have two more chances to play on this home field and make sure they give it everything they can.”

Sikeston hosts Hillsboro (11-7) on Thursday, Oct. 20, while Notre Dame travels to Jackson (7-10) for its regular-season finale on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
