High School volleyball roundup, Sept. 20: Ste. Genevieve hands Saxony Lutheran first loss in five-set thriller

Ste. Genevieve (11-2-2) ended Saxony Lutheran’s (13-1-1) unbeaten streak at 14 games with a five-set win on Tuesday in Fruitland.

The Crusaders took both even sets at 26-24 and 25-22, while Ste. Genevieve took the odds at 25-20, 25-21 and 15-8 to knock off Saxony Lutheran.

Saxony Lutheran hosts Jackson (8-0) at 7:30 p.m. on Monday while Ste. Genevieve hosts DeSoto (16-4) at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Jackson 3, Sikeston 0

Jackson (8-0) traveled to Sikeston (2-6) on Tuesday night and took down the Bulldogs in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-12) sweep, securing the regular season SEMO Conference Championship in the process.

Junior outside hitter Nadia Wasilewski led the Indians on the front line with 10 kills and five blocks. Classmates Ella Domian and Sydnie Floyd’s six and five kills paced Wasilewski, while junior Holland Guilliams’ seven digs led the Indians defensively.

Jackson travels north on Thursday to compete in the Gateway Matchup Tournament in Oakville, while Sikeston plays at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday at 7-4-1 Dexter.

Cape Central 3, Woodland 0

Cape Central (7-6) got a road win against Woodland (4-10-1) on Tuesday, sweeping the Cardinals 25-22, 25-23, 26-24.

Junior Madison Phelps led them defensively, finishing with 14 digs to boot with nine kills, which tied for the team lead with sophomore Piper Underwood. Junior Avery Criblez’s 10 assists led the Tigers, while sophomore Nalaiya Furlow finished with three blocks.

Senior Hailey Brotherton finished with a game-high 42 digs, leading the Cardinals by double sophomore Mallary Barks’ 21 digs. Caroline Rhodes led Woodland with eight kills, while junior Rhodie Long led the offense with 19 assists and five service aces.

Woodland hosts 9-4 Meadow Heights at 7 p.m. on Thursday, while Cape Central next hosts 9-4-2 Scott City at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Scott City 3, Oran 0

Scott City (9-4-2) took a 3-0 win over Oran (0-9) on Tuesday night to extend the Rams’ winning streak to three.

The Rams won in straight sets 25-11, 25-9, 25-9.

Sophomore Lilyan Landis led the Rams with seven kills, paced by senior Liza Dannenmueller at five. Sophomore Ramsey Spinks and junior Hattie Jones both totaled 10 assists to lead Scott City, while junior Alyssa Dirden finished with seven service aces.

Scott City plays at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Cape Central (6-6), while Oran plays on Monday at 0-3 Zalma.

Bell City 3, Leopold 1

Bell City (15-1-1) continued its strong season with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-9, 22-25, 27-25) win over the Wildcats at Leopold High School.

Junior Elaina Bowling led the Cubs' attack with 21 kills while classmate Kamryn Stubenrauch finished with seven.

Defensively, Bell City was led by Bowling's 18 digs and Stubenrauch's 12.

Bell City is scheduled to host Dexter on Thursday before facing Charleston on the road Monday. Leopold will host Zalma on Thursday.
