I do compile stats for the six schools in my coverage area (Cape, Chaffee, Jackson, Perryville, Scott City, St. Vincent), however I decided to wait to publish mine until everyone's stat leaders are compiled in the link provided by OldManFootball below. However, I would be happy to publish them separately as Dennis did here.
As far as Friday coverage and Saturday print goes, there are multiple factors:
1. I have one other reporter besides myself to cover games, six schools to cover and an 11 p.m. deadline to have my pages submitted. The most we can be at is two games per night (three if one of my teams is playing another publications teams — for example, Brian Rosener will be at Jackson-Poplar Bluff tonight, Clay Herrell will be at Cape Central-Park Hills Central and I will be at Chaffee-Malden). By the time I've finished my interviews and written my brief story for Saturday's print it's around 10:15-10:30.
Then, I have to edit my reporter's article and submit it, call the coaches whose games we weren't at, transcribe those interviews and write a story based on that. By the time I would be able to get all of that done it would be well past my deadline to get it in print.
2. We had a copy editor pass away a few weeks ago, so I've been designing the paper each day. On Fridays, I get the paper to a good spot and our editor-in-chief finishes up that night.
While I may not be able to get every single game in print, I do my best to make sure we have at least a couple of them, as well as the scores from each game published. The games that don't get published in Saturday's print eventually get published in Monday's e-edition and Tuesday's print.
Regardless whether the stories are in print or not, I make sure they're online by the end of the night so when you wake up in the morning you have access to them.
Is this ideal? Of course not. If I could, I would be at every single game every single day. But that's simply not possible.
As someone who grew up in the area and read Semoball religiously when I was a high school athlete, I work tirelessly to try and provide the best coverage I can despite the challenges I face on a day-to-day basis. I care a lot about our local communities and the young athletes we cover. I just simply can't be everywhere at all times.
Thank you for your comment and for your continued support. If you have any other questions or concerns I urge you to reach out to me directly at jcreeves@semoball.com and I'll be happy to discuss them with you.
Best,
J.C. Reeves
