SIKESTON, Mo. — Andrew Faire battled through harsh winds and wet conditions to earn a trip to the MSHSAA Class 4 State Meet at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield, Mo., on Monday, May 16.

The Sikeston senior earned the opportunity after shooting an 88 and 12th place finish at the district meet at Crown Pointe Golf Club in Farmington, Mo., on May 9.

“It was definitely the best I have played there and it was in the worse conditions,” Faire said. “It was a big challenge but I was able to overcome it.

“I’m excited to play [in the state meet] but I don’t get too nervous,” he continued. “I’m sure there will be some nerves on that first tee, but I usually try to get to know the people in my group. It helps me settle down, let’s me get more comfortable and I just play golf from there. Hopefully, I’ll make some new buddies that I’ll have a good time out on the course.”

Faire finished his senior campaign strong after a late start while dealing with a nagging ankle injury.

“He was at least three weeks behind,” said Sikeston coach Marvin Whitson. “And he’s come on the past few tournaments. He’s really improved his game. He’s been forward to and working hard to achieve this goal. Now, he’s elated about getting up there and playing.”

Faire will tee off at 9:57 a.m.

Sikeston finished seventh as a team with a score of 385 in the district. The Bulldogs had a couple of other golfers with solid performances but came up short of the state meet. Senior Carson Beaird missed the cut by two strokes after shooting a 92, and senior Payton Spurlock shot a 98.

“[Beaird] did what he needed to do, but just had bad breaks on a hole that cost him,” Whitson said. “They just had some trouble with the high winds and wet conditions.”

The last Sikeston golfer to qualify for the state meet was Austin Crawford who finished 72nd at the Class 3 meet in 2019.
