District XC roundup, Oct. 30: Local athletes, teams qualify for state championships
Woodland’s Reed Layton continued his impressive sophomore season at Saturday’s Class 2 District 1 boys cross country meet in Ironton, Mo., and Oak Ridge won the Class 1 District 1 team championship.
Layton finished third in the district race with a time of 17:03.88, qualifying for the state championships. Bloomfield senior Josh Reynolds took eighth place. The top 30 individual finishers and top four teams advanced to the state meet.
Oak Ridge’s Grant Meyer and Brock Hobeck finished fourth and fifth in the Class 1 District 1 meet, while Zalma juniors Eli Ford and Kennett Rampley finished in sixth and ninth place, respectively. Delta junior Trevor Stoffregen rounded out the top 10 in 10th place.
In the Class 3 District 1 meet, Notre Dame junior Mason Morris was the lone top-10 finisher, completing the race with a time of 17:11.43 for eighth place. Jackson sophomore Bryce Gentry was also the lone top-10 finisher in the Class 5 District 1 meet, placing 10th.
Bloomfield and Jackson also advanced to the state championships, finishing fourth in their respective district meets.
Girls
Leopold junior Kinslee VanderMierden was the top girls finisher in the Southeast Missourian coverage area.
VanderMierden finished in fourth place in the Class 1 District 1 meet with a time of 21:05.85. St. Vincent senior Anna Schwartz took 10th.
Woodland freshman Hannah Vawter and senior Emilee Rouggly made the top 10 in the Class 2 District 1 meet, finishing just three-tenths of a second apart in sixth and seventh place.
Notre Dame sophomore Lauren Eftink was the lone top-10 finisher in the Class 4 District 1 meet, taking seventh place.
St. Vincent (second place in C1D1) and Woodland (fourth place in C2D1) qualified for state championships as a team.
The state championship races will be Friday (Class 4 and 5) and Saturday (Class 1-3) at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia.
