Softball Roundup, Oct. 4: Alcorn “doubles” up Van Buren past Alton

Behind Scarlett Alcorn’s two RBI doubles, the Van Buren Bulldogs made quick work of Alton on Monday, beating the Comets in six innings, 11-1.

The senior’s first double came in the bottom of the second inning, with Alcorn smashing a pitch sharply to right field, scoring Olivia Christiansen from second base.

Alcorn’s second double came in the fifth inning, hitting a frozen rope to right field.

Altogether, Van Buren lit up Alton pitching for 14 hits, led by Alcorn, Ella Willibanks, Olivia Brown, Mya Gillespie, Madison Powell, and Christensen, who all recorded two hits each.

The Bulldogs (4-9) also took advantage of four Comet errors, scoring three runs on those misplays.

Van Buren scored four runs in the opening frame, one in the second inning, one in the fifth, and finally put the game on ice, plating five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The winning pitcher was Alcorn, who threw a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits.

Coach Jeff Berry’s starter struck out eight and only allowed one free pass, throwing 92 pitches and recording 67 of those for strikes.

The Bulldogs will play at 4:30 today when they host Twin Rivers.

Jackson 13, Fox 0

Jackson head coach Shawn Wilding got three RBIs from Karli Johnson as well as a one-hit complete game in the circle as the Indians drilled Fox on Monday, 13-0.

The Indian’s offense stung Warrior pitching for 14 hits, including a game-high three base hits from Miley Conklin.

Kylie Darrow (2-for-4, two RBIs, two runs scored), Miranda Carnell (2-for-4, two RBIs, run scored), and Miranda Ladson (2-for-3, RBI, two runs scored) also had strong games at the dish.

Johnson allowed just one hit through six innings on the rubber, striking out 10 and walking one.

Jackson (17-7) will contest North County on the road at 4:30 p.m. today.

Poplar Bluff 6, Notre Dame 2

Emilee Cheek’s grand slam lifted the Poplar Bluff softball team past Notre Dame on Monday.

Cheek’s first career home run capped a one-out rally in the fifth as the Mules overcame a one-run deficit and beat the host Bulldogs 6-2.

Morgan Courtney had three hits, Madelyn Hefner scored twice and reached base three times with a pair of singles and Clara Rahlmann drove in a run for the Mules.

Breann Thresher struck out two and allowed two runs on eight hits, three walks and a hit batter in six innings. Rahlmann finished the seventh, giving up a hit but getting out of a bases-loaded jam with a ground ball to Kennedy Zgaynor at second base.

Notre Dame had a total of nine hits but three errors hurt the Bulldogs.

Notre Dame held a 1-0 lead until the top half of the fifth inning when a grand slam by the Mules put the visitors in the lead for good.

Junior Ainsley Burnett had two hits and one RBI, while Marianne Renaud (two hits, one walk), Halle Ressel (one hit, one RBI), Ashley Carrow (one run, one walk), Kadi Dohogne (one run, one hit, two walks), Hailey Burnett (one hit), Audry LeGrand (one hit), and Carolyne Cork (one hit) also contributed for the Bulldogs.

Ainsley Burnett led the team in doubles with two, while LeGrand had one.

Halle Ressel started on the rubber for Notre Dame (16-9), throwing five innings, allowing nine hits, four earned runs, and had two strikeouts.

Hailey Burnett pitched two innings in relief allowing eleven hits, one earned run, four strikeouts, and one walk.

Notre Dame (16-9) will host Perryville at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Poplar Bluff (14-11) will host Kelly at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Neelyville 3, Cape Central 2

Behind three hits from Leah Million and two runs scored by Dixie Cloud, Neelyville edged out Cape Central in extra innings on Monday, winning 3-2 at Cape Central High School.

Neelyville scored the go-ahead and eventual winning run in a 2-2 game in the top half of the ninth inning, as Cloud led the inning off with a walk, then scored later on a ground out by Bridget Million.

The host Tigers (8-16) were only able to scratch out six hits, as Martasia Carter tallied two of those with Alexis Trickey driving in the only offensive run of the game.

Ki Bogan scored the other run on an error by Neelyville pitcher September Preslar.

Keri Williams was the losing hurler on record, giving up three runs in nine innings pitched.

Williams did strike out 11 batters but also walked five.

Cape Central will play on the road at 4 p.m. on Wednesday against Saxony Lutheran.

North County 6, Sikeston 5

Sikeston had a total of 11 hits, holding the lead through three innings against North county on Monday, but could not hold it, losing to North County, 6-3.

Junior Hailey Cantrell had a great game with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs.

Dakota Thompson had three hits and two runs, while Nayla Bonner (one run, one hit, one RBI), Kaylee pipes (one run, two hits, two walks), Abigail Deshaney ( one hit, two walks), Sydney Burton (one RBI, one walk), Sophia Carter (one hit), and Amaree Nelson (one run) also contributed for the Bulldogs.

Bonner lead the team with three stolen bases while Pipes added two.

Bonner pitched all seven innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs, striking out eight,

Sikeston (9-14) will travel to East Carter on Tuesday with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.
