Chaffee softball downs Kelly in extra innings

The Chaffee Lady Devils scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to knock off Kelly 3-1 on the road Tuesday afternoon.

With the game tied at 1-1, Chaffee opened the top of the eighth with a single to left field from Jayden Welch. Hailey Rains then followed with a double to center, scoring Welch to give the Lady Devils a 2-1 lead.

Chaffee (3-1) added an insurance run when Lauren Wagoner hit a hard single to right field that scored Rains.

Lady Devils pitcher Reese Van Pelt shut the door on Kelly in the bottom of the inning to give Chaffee their first win over Kelly since 2018.

Van Pelt earned the win, pitching all eight innings allowing just one earned run on three hits while walking two and striking out six.

Welch led the Lady Devils at the plate, going 2 for 2 while also drawing 2 walks.

Welch was at the plate in the third inning when Chaffee scored their first run of the game on a wild pitch, scoring Ayne’ Held who had walked.

Kelly (0-2) scored their only run when Mady Johnson led off the bottom of the sixth with a pinch hit single and later scored on a single from Paiten Groves. Groves, a junior, had two of the three hits for the Lady Hawks.
