Jackson is again atop the state media football rankings in Class 5.

The defending state champions received all 10 first-place votes from media members from around the state. Only defending champion Lamar in Class 2 also received all 10 first-place votes.

Hayti is ranked No. 5 in Class 1 while Kennett also received votes in Class 3.

Voters had 16 teams earn points in both Class 5 and Class 2, the most teams honored. Points are based on a voter's ballot with the top-ranked team earning 10 points, No. 2 earns nine points down to one point for a 10-place vote.

Blair Oaks, the defending Class 3 champion, also returns to the top of the rankings along with Windsor in Class 1.

DeSmet and Raymore-Peculiar, who met in the Show-Me Bowl last year, split the first-place votes in Class 6. Raymore-Peculiar, which won the title 23-0, is second to DeSmet by three points. CBC, which lost to East St. Louis (Ill.) 48-44 on Friday, is ranked third.

In Class 4, Smithville is the top-ranked team after reaching the semifinals last year before losing 13-10 to eventual champion Helias Catholic, which moved up to Class 5 this season. MICDS, last year's runner-up, is ranked second with West Plains and Hannibal each picking up a first-place vote.

Hayti opened with a 40-22 win over Thayer, a state semifinalist last year after beating Hayti by 30 in the district final before losing to eventual champion Windsor 14-12.

In Class 5, Webb City follows Jackson in the rankings after losing 41-40 to Joplin, ranked No. 4 in Class 6, on a last-second field goal. Raytown, Battle, Holt, Carthage, Chaminade follow with Ft. Zumwalt North, which lost to Battle 36-35 Friday, is ranked eighth.

There was no preseason poll because MSHSAA did not release classification assignments until Friday.
