River Dragons burn Catfish 20-1

Cape Catfish outfielder Giovanni Del Negro

After opening the second half of the Prospect League summer schedule with a pair of victories, the Cape Catfish came back to Earth in resounding fashion Saturday, as they fell at Alton 20-1.

The Catfish (2-1) dug themselves a 3-0 hole by the third inning, as the River Dragons (1-1) got to Cape starter Chad Donze early. However, the majority of the damage came in the fourth inning, as Alton connected for six hits, took advantage of three Catfish errors, and scored 11 runs.

Donze (1-2) took the loss after allowing three earned runs in the opening three innings. However, Cape reliever Landon Comer struggled after replacing Donze in the fourth.

He worked 2/3 of an inning and gave up four earned runs while walking two.

Donze walked five and struck out two.

Kennett High School graduate Marshall Brown was effective in throwing 1 1/3 innings. He gave up just one hit while striking out one and not allowing an earned run.

Mason Spiers closed the game for the Catfish. He threw the final inning and allowed six earned runs on five hits while walking two.

Trailing 20-0 in their final at-bat, the Catfish got one run across.

Giovanni Del Negro reached after being hit by a pitch to open the inning. He advanced to second and later third base during an at-bat by Cameron Rountree before scoring on a sac fly by Kolten Poorman.

Andrew Stone, Diego Johnson, Ellison Hanna II, Poorman, and Seth Johnson each had hits in the loss.
