Cape Central sophomore Rakiara Bogan is making her first trip to the state championship meet after winning the 100-meter dash and finishing fourth in the triple jump at Saturday's Class 4 sectional track meet at Park Hills Central High School.

Bogan set a personal record in the 100, posting a time of 12.56, four-tenths of a second faster than second place.

"I get nervous in the beginning," Bogan said, "but when I hear the gun go off, that means I'm about to win."

Bogan's coach Collin Sheridan praised her ability but hopes she, along with the other Cape Central athletes that qualified for the state championship meet, will be able to relax a bit now that they've qualified.

"They've got to just understand that now they're out, and they deserve to be here," Sheridan said. "They need to relax a little bit, especially if they're young like Ms. Bogan. They need to relax and get through the experience one time, then prepare for the future."

Sheridan believes Bogan -- who he said scored 10% of the Tigers' points this season, including the boys' team -- has an opportunity to make it to state in each of her events in the future.

"I would hope that, in the future, she could actually go in all four events," Sheridan said. "We've got a relay right now with her and we got fifth today. We were very, very close.

"I'm sure that she could probably handle the 200-dash also and be able to score in that. If we can keep her speed and slowly improve in the jumps she should be a big-time scorer."

In addition to Bogan, Cape Central is sending four other individuals to state and one relay team. Also qualifying for the Tigers are Te'Mariah Dorsey (200-meter dash), Taler Dockery (300-meter hurdles), Jalee Spain (pole vault) and Layla Sumner (shot put), and the 4x400-meter relay team.

Sikeston had two state qualifiers Saturday. Kyndal Steward took silver in the long jump and Armani Hodges finished the same in the shot put.

Notre Dame's Haley Smith and Allie Burnett made the cut, finishing fourth in the 800 and 100-meter hurdles respectively. The Bulldogs' 4x100 and 4x200 teams also qualified for state.

Class 3

Kelly's Alaney Moore took home two gold medals Saturday, winning both the long jump and triple jump. She, along with the 4x400 team, were the only Hawks to qualify for state.

Dexter's Gabrielle Brown won big in the 1,600-meter run, posting a school-record time of 5:28.43. The junior Bearcat also finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:24.07, also a school record.

Kennett's 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays continued to impress, winning both events. Anna Vancil also qualified, taking third in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump.

Taleigh Harrell advanced in the 100-meter dash, finishing fourth, but was edged out at the finish line in the 200 for fifth.
