SIKESTON — Both the Sikeston boys and girls track and field teams earned top-three finishes at the Sikeston Invitational on Monday afternoon.

The boys finished in second place with 110 total team points, while the girls finished in third with 97.3 points, leaving head coach Betsy Colwick more than pleased with her team’s performances, which included numerous personal bests.

"I'm really happy with a lot of things,” Colwick said. “I'm happy, though, that Goreville, Ill. came because they have a really good sprinter, and that's a good matchup for Daniel. To see someone as quick as him and put him to the test, but I think he competed well. I think our 4x100 and 4x200 teams both competed well, both boys and girls.

“C.J. Posey placed first in the high jump. Trey Gorman got a new PR in the 300-meter hurdles, I believe, or at least it was close.”

Poplar Bluff took home first-place honors on the boys’ side, with 154 team points, while Kennett won on the girls’ side, edging Dexter by one point, 112-111.

For Sikeston, the day concluded on a high note as the 4x400-meter relay team elapsed a goal of 3:45 seconds with a 3:40 finish to win the event.

A team made up of Daniel Lawrence, Jonathan Green, Ethan Pope, and Dontrez Williams edged Malden’s quartet 3:40.46-3:40.74, and after Williams crossed the finish line, his teammates were there to shower him with praise.

However, it wasn’t just the relay team that had a good day.

Sikeston finished with five individual champions.

Posey won two events, finishing first in the high jump with a leap of 6-6.75 feet. He also won the long jump after a leap of 6.79 meters.

In the track events, Lawrence finished his day with one win and one second-place finish.

In the 100-meter dash, Lawrence bested Goreville, Illinois’ Cole Rushing 11.58-11.64 and was motivated after falling short in the 110-meter hurdles. Poplar Bluff’s Jadarius Pigg won the 110-meter hurdles, with a time of 15 seconds.

"I came out very fast, and I kept going,” Lawrence said. “I lost in the 110-meter hurdles; I got second place, which motivated me in the 100.”
