Boys Baseball Roundup, Apr. 27: Kennett scores early and often, downs Cape Central, 15-4

The Cape Central Tigers fell behind early to the top-ranked baseball team in Class 4, as Kennett compiled runs of two in the first inning, seven in the second frame, two more in the third, and four more in the fourth, to beat Cape Central, 15-4 on Monday.

Cape Central head coach Justin Leiser went with junior Zac Mattison to start things off on the mound, but Mattison was met with uncomparable tenacity, as the Kennett offense stung Mattison for seven runs, with the Central starter lasting only one inning.

Reliever Caden Hahn pitched one inning for the Tigers but didn't fare much better, allowing three runs on two hits.

Leiser next brought in senior Jake Simmons, who pitched two innings of relief but was touched up for five runs on five hits, giving up a three-run home run to Indian's third baseman Reese Robinett in the fourth inning. The Arkansas signee drove in a game-high four RBIs in the contest.

At the plate, Cape Central was led by Kevin Robinson, who also went yard in the game, driving in two RBIs in the fourth inning off Kennett reliever Tanner Duncan.

Riley Henfling took the win for the Indians, throwing 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, striking six, and walking one.

The Kennett offense stung Tiger pitcher for 11 hits, as Robinett, Braden Tice, and Bodey Ellis each recorded two hits each.

Cape Central (10-7) will travel to Perryville today to take on the Pirates at 4:30 p.m.

Kennett (13-5) will host Jackson today at 4:30 p.m. in what should be a dynamic matchup in SEMO Conference play.

Saxony Lutheran 6, Kelly 1

In a matchup of state-ranked teams in class 3, the Saxony Lutheran Crusaders touching up Kelly starting pitcher Gavin Jansen for three runs on five hits, as the visiting Crusaders took advantage of six Jansen walks, scoring five runs in the fourth inning, going on to beat the Hawks, 6-1, Monday.

Six different Saxony Lutheran hitters recorded an RBI, as Hunter Hamilton, Tanner King, Zac Lewis, Eli Brown, Wilson Lodge, and Jacob Johnson all drove in runs.

Will LeDure let the Crusaders attack with three hits in four plate appearances.

Brown was the starting pitcher of record, earning the win, throwing 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out seven, and walking four.

Jansen was on the losing end on the mound, throwing three innings, giving up three runs on three hits, striking out six but issuing the six free passes.

Jansen also drove in the lone run in the game for Kelly (13-4), grounding out to Saxony Lutheran shortstop Tanner King as Bryce Phelps crossed the plate.

The Crusaders (14-1) will play another state-ranked team on Wednesday, as they travel to Chaffee, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.

Kelly will host South Pemiscot on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Campbell 10, Bernie 0

Skylar Morrison struck out 10 and allowed only four hits in six innings of the Campbell baseball team’s 10-0 victory over the Bernie Mules on Monday at Campbell.

Rallen Owens was issued the loss, yielding five runs — two earned — on two hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Morrison went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to lead Campbell, who finished with seven hits. Charles Parker went 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Wyatt Nimmo went 2 for 3, and John Nimmo and Johnny Vaughn had one hit apiece for Bernie, who fell to 11-8.

Campbell improved to 13-2.

Advance 15, Richland 0

Jack Bailey pitched three no-hit innings, and the Advance baseball team routed Richland 15-0 in a game called after three innings because of the 15-run mercy rule.

Advance scored seven runs in the first inning and eight in the second Monday at Essex.

Bailey struck out six and walked two in three innings.

Shai Sherfield was charged with the loss, yielding seven runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks in one inning.

Layton Keith went 3 for 3 with a triple and six RBIs. Landon Dailey went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Jed Garner went 2 for 3 with a double. Bailey went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple, and one RBI. Gus Garner, Seth Kirchhoff, Jaren Schrader and Colton Silman contributed one RBI apiece.

Oran 2, Chaffee 1

Oran pitcher Ty Johnson, who recently signed on to play baseball at Mineral Area College in the fall, was dealing on Monday, striking out 16 batters in a complete-game win over Chaffee, 2-1.

Johnson allowed just one run on three hits, dominating the third-ranked team in Class 2, as another Mineral Area College signee Brennan Fowler, recorded two of the three Red Devil hits, going 2 for 3 at the plate.

The other hit for Chaffee (13-2) was by freshman shortstop Levi McKinnie, who doubled off of Johnson in the seventh inning.

Oran received RBIs from Carter Heuring (1-2 in the game) and Johnson, who hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, to score Heuring from third base.

Red Devil's starter Alec Brown (also signed with Mineral Area on Monday) recorded the loss, throwing all seven innings, striking out five while walking two, allowing the two runs on five hits.

Oran (15-2) will likely maintain their #1 ranking in the Class One state rankings as they host Charleston today at 4:30.

Chaffee will look to get back on the winning track with a meeting with Class 3, #2 ranked Saxony Lutheran on Wednesday. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.

Perryville 5, Fredericktown 2

The Perryville pitching staff provided head coach Blane Boss with a strong game on the mound on Monday afternoon, combining for just two runs scored against on five hits, as the Pirate offense scratched across five runs, to defeat Fredericktown, 5-2.

Starting pitcher Sam Barber threw four innings, giving up just one earned run, striking out four and walking two.

Charlie Ussery pitched two innings of relief, only allowing one run on one hit.

Grant Smith came in to shut the door in the seventh inning, striking out the side to earn the save.

Jack Rehagen, Mitchell Zoellner, Fischer Scheiter, Trey Scruggs, and Eli Derickson each collected one hit each, while Barber and Zoellner each drove in runs.

Perryville (3-9) will host Cape Central today at 4:30 p.m.

South Pemiscot 4, Senath-Hornersville 2

The South Pemiscot baseball squad scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning and two more in the top of the seventh inning as it rallied past Senath-Hornersville 4-2 Monday.

Luke Southern, Steven Henley, Bevin Carlisle, and Beau Rinehart each drove home one run for South Pemiscot.

Zander Owens and Parker Rhew each drove home a run for Senath-Hornersville.

Christian Garza pitched all seven innings for Senath-Hornersville. He allowed four runs (three earned), seven hits, struck out one, and walked zero.

Henley, Southern, and Trevan Shuburte also saw time on the hill for South Pemiscot. Henley pitched three scoreless innings, Shuburte pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, and Southern allowed two runs while recording two outs.

South Pemiscot (8-5) visits Scott City Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Senath-Hornersville (4-11) hosts Portageville Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Campbell 11, Caruthersville 0

The Campbell baseball squad beat Caruthersville 11-0 in five innings Monday.

Gordon Todd threw three scoreless frames and Sam Bunting pitched two scoreless innings for Campbell.

Skylar Morrison finished 2 for 3 with a team-high three RBIs. Kaden Siebert was 2 for 2 with one RBI. Charlie Parker, Todd, Bunting, and Joey Barnett also had one RBI each for Campbell.

Campbell improves to 12-2 and Caruthersville drops to 0-11.

Scott City 14, Woodland 4

Scott City fell behind early, giving up two, first-inning runs to Woodland on Monday, but stormed back, adding two runs each in innings two and three, as well as three runs in the fourth frame and seven more in the fifth inning, to win going away in five innings, 14-4.

The Rams trailed 2 to 0 after the first frame, led by back-to-back RBI singles by Rafe Johnson and Seth Abernathy, putting the Cardinals in the lead.

Scott City's offense really kicked things into gear in the fifth frame, as the inning featured singles by Holden Miller and Chase Venable, a three-run blast by Skler Sykes, and an RBI double by Andrew Enderle, all off of Woodland relief pitcher Jo Cook.

Nick Hillman collected the win on the mound, throwing all five innings.

Hillman gave up four runs on six hits, striking out seven Cardinals, while issuing three base on balls.

Woodland starter Lane VanGennip recorded the loss, throwing four innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits.

Cook threw one inning, getting pounded for seven runs on seven hits, including the home run by Sykes.

Scott City (11-7) will look to keep their winning streak going today, as they host South Pemiscot (5-8) at 4:30 p.m.

Woodland (6-6-1) will play at Class 6 school Poplar Bluff today, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.

Portageville 4, Charleston 2

PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. — Gabe Hughes and the Portageville baseball team downed Charleston on Monday night in Portageville.

The Bulldogs' hurler threw a complete game, giving up six hits and two runs — both earned — while striking out nine batters and walking one in Portageville's 4-2 win over the Bluejays.

At the plate, Castle Portwood went 2-for-3 with one run, while Trey Benthal went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

On the opposing side of the field, Charleston's Dawson Crawford threw six innings, giving up six hits and four runs — two earned — while fanning seven and walking two.
