Boys HS Baseball Roundup, Apr. 16: Oran improves to 10-1 on season with win over Advance

In a battle of Class 1, state ranked baseball teams, Oran took down Advance Thursday, 4-1, as the Eagles were led by a 2 for 4 game by Seth Cauble and a two-run home run by Connor Kern in the third inning.

Oran scored ones run in each of the first two innings, followed by the two-run shot by Kern in the third inning, to make it 4-0.

The Hornets scored their lone run in the home-half of the sixth inning, as Augustus Garner doubled in Landon Dailey.

Ty Johnson collected the win on the mound for Oran (10-1), throwing a four hit complete game, allowing just one run, striking out 12, while walking two.

Garner took the loss for Advance (10-4), throwing 4 1/3 innings, giving up all four runs on six hits, striking out five while walking six.

Layton Keith pitched 2 2/3 innings of relieve for the Hornets, striking out three while not issuing a hit or a run.

Oran will take part in the Notre Dame Showcase Saturday, playing host Notre Dame at 3:30 p.m., followed by a match up with Cooter at 5:45 p.m.

Advance will take part in the SCAA Tournament starting on Monday.

Saxony Lutheran 6, Bell City 3

The undefeated Saxony Lutheran baseball team picked up their twelfth win of the season, beating Bell City on the road Thursday, 6-3.

The Crusaders took the lead in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs off of a home run by Tanner King.

Saxony Lutheran plated two more runs two innings later in the third inning.

The Crusaders tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, as Bell City got on the board in the home half of the fourth inning. The Cubs added runs in the sixth and seventh inning, but couldn't mount the comeback against state ranked Saxony Lutheran.

Wilson Lodge earned the win on the mound for the Crusaders, pitching six innings, allowing two runs (one earned), on five hits, striking out nine while walking five.

Will LeDure came on to pitch in the seventh inning, giving up a run on one hit.

He struck out two and walked two.

King led Saxony Lutheran offensively, going 2 for 3 at the plate, driving in three RBIs and scoring three runs.

LeDure collected two hits in the contest, and Zac Lewis drove in three RBIs as well.

Nate Stone took the loss for Bell City (7-5), throwing five innings, giving up five runs on six hits, striking out seven, while walking two.

Saxony Lutheran will travel to St. Pius X in Festus today, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.

Bell City will look to get back on the winning track on Monday as they take part in the SCAA Tournament.

Chaffee 18, Dexter 5

The Chaffee Red Devils improved to 10-1 on the season as head coach Brian Horrell has his team playing some very good baseball, as they defeated Dexter, 18-5, on Wednesday.

Chaffee had to come back, as the Bearcats scored three runs in the first inning.

The Devils did just that, plating two runs in the third inning, three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, tacking on six runs in the sixth frame, and adding on four more in the seventh.

The Chaffee offense supplied starting pitcher Jagger Sadler with 14 hits, as Brenna Fowler had three hits, two of which were RBI doubles, driving in four runs.

Freshman Levi Crowe went 3 for 5 in the game, driving in a run as well as scoring three runs.

Fellow freshman Kade Atkins crossed the plate four times, a game high.

Sadler collected the win, throwing 5 1/3 innings, striking out six while walking three.

The winning pitcher gave up five runs on six hits.

For Dexter (3-8), Seth Teel took the loss, throwing just 1/3 of an inning, giving up three runs in the third inning.

Starting pitcher Peyton Driskell threw 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on five hits, striking out four while walking five.

Joshua Kaufman was the hitting star for the Bearcats, going 2 for 4 at the plate, driving in two RBIs, while smashing an RBI double and triple.

Chaffee will take to the road on Monday when they take on Charleston at 4:30 p.m.

Dexter will look to get back on track today when they host East Carter at 4:30 p.m.

Woodland 9, Leopold 5

The Woodland Cardinals ran off with the lead late, as the Wildcats committed five errors that lead to the Cardinals taking the win, 9-5, on Tuesday.

Both Woodland and Leopold scored two runs each in the opening inning, as Leopold would plate three more in the third inning, compared to just one in that frame.

The fourth and fifth frames are where Woodland pulled away, scoring two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth, to pull away.

Cardinal's lead off hitter Jo Cook hammered out two hits in four plate appearances, driving home two runs, while scoring two runs.

Rafe Johnson also drove in two runs, while Lane VanGennip drove in a run and scored twice.

VanGennip started on the mound for Woodland, throwing 2 1/3 innings, striking out three while walking six.

VanGennip escaped the hook, giving up five runs on four hits.

Cook pitched the rest of the contest, throwing 4 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, striking out seven, to earn the win.

The losing pitcher was Caleb Schaab, as he allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Schaab struck out two while walking two.

Starting pitcher Mason Deck went just 2 2/3 innings, giving up three runs.

At the plate, Deck doubled twice, going 3 for 3, driving in two runs.

Woodland (4-3-1) will host Meadow Heights (4-7) today, with game time at 4:30 p.m.

Leopold (2-4) will play a road game at Zalma today at 4:30 p.m.

Campbell 7, Naylor 0

The Campbell baseball squad improved to 8-1 as it beat Naylor 7-0 at home Thursday.

Charlie Parker threw all seven innings for Campbell. He allowed three hits, struck out seven, and walked four.

Gordon Todd finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Kaden Siebert had a hit and two RBIs to pace Campbell. Luke Weidenbenner and Jackson Langley also drove home one run each for Campbell.

Naylor (5-6) hosts Winona Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Campbell visits Portageville Monday at 6 p.m.

Holcomb 10, Greenville 3

Holcomb beat Greenville 10-3 for its fourth straight victory Thursday.

Hunter Wilson was the winning pitcher in relief of Wilson McGew. Wilson threw four shutout innings for Holcomb (6-2).

Nate Rhew hit a three-run homer for Holcomb.

Grenville fell to 2-7.
