BREAKING: Former Ritenour head coach Kyle Wagner to take over Sikeston's football program

Kyle Wagner

SIKESTON — Ritenour head coach Kyle Wagner will be taking over the Sikeston football program, according to a press release from Sikeston R-6.

Wagner was hired July 1, 2020, as the head coach at Ritenour, but the Huskies did not compete in the fall due to COVID-19.

Over his years of coaching, Wagner held stops at Lutheran North, Christian Brothers College, and University City.

At his many stops, Wagner held the following positions:

Strength and conditioning coach

Special teams coordinator

Defensive coordinator

Offensive coordinator

During his time at Lutheran North, the Crusaders were 38-5 with three trips to the state semifinals and one state championship. In 2019 he served as offensive coordinator for the 14-0 Class 2 state championship team that averaged 47 points per game. In 2017-18, Wagner served as the defensive coordinator.

He was a defensive backs coach at Christian Brothers High School during their 27-game winning streak, where the Cadets appeared in a state final and a semifinal appearance in 2015-16. During his two seasons as an assistant at University City, they went to the district championship both years.

Wagner replaces Terry Flannigan, who resigned in January.

The school district took consideration from students, parents, staff, and the administration to help with the selection process.

“Mr. Wagner’s passion, energy, knowledge, experience, and innovative thinking convinced the district hiring committee that he was the right choice for the district,” said Sikeston superintendent Dr. Tony Robinson in a press release. “Serving on the staff of elite programs in the state of Missouri, we believe he will lead to the future success of the Sikeston football program.”

Sikeston finished 6-14 over the last two seasons and has not had a winning season since 2016 when the Bulldogs went 7-4.

Wagner and his wife Andrea have two children — Kennady and Emersyn.
