Girls Basketball Roundup, Feb. 23: Kennett completes home comeback, squeeks by Saxony Lutheran, 46-45

Kennett trailed for much of the game Monday, as the Indians hosted a 9-13 Saxony Lutheran squad, looking desperately for a road victory.

But a 20 to eight, fourth quarter-point margin helped the home team sustain the comeback, defeating the Crusaders, 46-45.

Kennett fell behind from the tip-off, as Saxony Lutheran grabbed an 11 to eight lead after the end of the opening quarter.

The Indians retaliated, scoring 11 points of their own in the second frame, to just eight for the Crusaders, as both teams were deadlocked at 19 points apiece heading into halftime.

The third quarter belonged solely to Saxony Lutheran, putting up 18 points to just seven points from Kennett, as the Crusaders cruised into the final quarter with an 11 point advantage.

The Indians supplied their best might in the fourth and final quarter, outscoring the Saxony Lutheran to the tune of 20 to eight, leap-frogging the Crusaders, and pulling off the one-point win.

Kennett (12-11) was led in scoring by Caroline Patton, who topped paced the Indians with 13 points.

Taleigh Harrell and Kaniya Madlock also hit double figures, both totaling 11 points each in the win.

Saxony Lutheran (9-14) received 13 points from senior Maddox Murphy in the defeat.

Kennett will travel to Poplar Bluff Wednesday to take on the Mules in what will be their final regular-season game of the season before starting district play on Saturday.

Saxony Lutheran will host Doniphan today at 7:30 p.m. to wind down their regular season.

Meadow Heights 50, Advance 49

In Class 2, District 3 quarterfinals action, the fourth-seeded and host Meadow Heights Panthers defeated fifth seed Advance 50-49 Monday to advance to play top-seeded Oran Wednesday at Oran.

The Panthers took an early 10-4 advantage heading into the second stanza and added to that lead on a 17 to nine-second quarter, leading 27-13 at halftime.

Advance found their rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring Meadow Heights 23 to five as the Panthers found themselves tied with the Hornets heading into the last and deciding quarter.

The Panthers were able to pull out the closest of the marginal win, taking the victory by one point.

Ashley Gruenke led the victorious Panthers with 16 points, while Ashley Allen finished with 13 points and Gracie Cook added 12 points.

Advance was paced by junior Alandry Below who played masterfully, scoring a game-high 35 points.

Below also grabbed 14 rebounds and collected six steals for the Hornets, who finish their season with a record of 13-10.

Meadow Heights (9-12) will take on top-seeded Oran Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Oran.

CHARLESTON, Mo. — The second quarter separated Charleston from East Prairie on Monday in the quarterfinals of the Class 3 District 2 Tournament.

Mistavia Murray led the Bluejays with 17 points, while Katie Brewer led the Eagles with eight points.

Charleston advances to the semifinals at Woodland on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
