PORTAGEVILLE - Thursday night turned out to be a golden night for the Kennett middle school boys basketball program.

Kennett took home the top prize in the seventh and eighth grade Bootheel Conference tournaments at Portageville Middle School.

Kennett edged Malden 34-29 in the seventh grade title game Thursday.

“I’ve coached many teams,” Kennett seventh grade boys basketball coach Travis Wilcutt said. “But coaching this group was special to me because before the season started they had no idea who they were as a group. We had kids who had never played basketball before who ended up starting. We also had kids that didn’t think they were leaders that became leaders. The success they had this season only losing one game eliminated many of their doubts.”

Kennett also beat Caruthersville 52-17 in the eighth grade championship game Thursday.

“The guys had been working pretty hard so I had confidence in them,” Kennett eighth grade boys basketball coach Jack Walls said. “They also had confidence in themselves and each other and that’s the most important part.”
