Kennett seventh & eighth grade girls basketball teams place first at Bootheel Conference Tournament
KENNETT - Thursday night was a golden night for the Kennett middle school girls basketball program.
The Kennett seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both took home the top prize at the Bootheel Conference Tournament at Kennett middle school.
“Neither team played particularly well but both teams came up big when they needed to,” Kennett coach Ronnie Lewallen said. “They made the big plays in crucial situations for their games. I’m so proud of both teams. This is my first year coaching girls basketball and it was pretty enjoyable.”
No. 1 seeded Kennett won a defensive battle against No. 2 seeded Holcomb 30-13 in the seventh grade title game.
“Our offense wasn’t great but our defense was really good,” Lewallen said. “It was one of those nights where the shots didn’t fall but our defense didn’t take the night off. They came up big.”
No. 1 seeded Kennett followed by edging No. 2 seeded South Pemiscot 37-34 in the eight grade championship. Kennett trailed the eighth grade title game by 14 points at halftime before opening the second half on a 20-0 run to move ahead.
“We made a few defensive adjustments at halftime,” Lewallen said. “We started hedging a pick and slowing their guards down a little bit. Then some of our girls that were in foul trouble got back in and we were able to speed them up a little bit more than we could in the first half.”
