SD GIRLS BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Upperclassmen look to help Oran under first-year head coach Amy Pobst

2020-2021 Oran Eagles (from left): Katie Webb, Alyssa Spane, and Mallory Lowes.

Head Coach: Amy Pobst, 1st season (0-0)

Last Season: 25-6, lost to East Buchanan in the Class 2 Semifinals 66-37

Notes: There is turnover in the girls' basketball program at Oran for 2020-2021, as Amy Pobst takes over the reins after serving as an assistant coach last season.

Sitting on the sidelines, Pobst watched as the Eagles advanced to the Class 2 final four for the second time in program history and hopes to make it a third trip this season.

"This is a very driven group," Pobst said. "I look forward to the chance to lead them and see what we can make out of this team. I enjoy basketball and working with young kids and try and make them the best players we can make them.

"I think it was a great experience for the younger girls. To get out there and see it, see what it's about; we didn't get the full effect of it, but I think it was still a good experience for them to get out there and see the other stuff."

Oran returns 2019 Class 2 All-State selection Katie Webb this year to go along with a cohesive junior class and emerging sophomore bunch.

Last season, Webb averaged 15.4 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per contest while shooting 63 percent from the floor.

"Katie's a great player," Pobst said. "She's a hard worker, she's a great leader, and probably the thing I like the best out of her is her leadership. She's driven to do the best she can to work hard and not get beat. And, she does a great job of leading the younger players to do the same thing.

"With her, not only with her abilities, but I think she makes all the other players rise to become better players too."

In the backcourt, Oran will look different, as they lose fellow Class 2 All-Stater Kaylee Payne.

Payne averaged 14.6 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists, and Pobst knows that one player won't be able to fill that void.

"We aren't looking to replace Kaylee with one player; you can't replace Kaylee with just one player," Pobst said. "We've had multiple players step up. The girls did a great job, even with all of the restrictions and things. They did their offseasons playing on their travel teams, and they've all come together."

2020-2021 Oran Eagles (from left, top row): Hannah Boshell, Rylee Boshell, Lydia Tankersley, Traci Hency, and Hope Woodfin.
