The Holcomb Hornets girls basketball program is blessed with experience entering its 2020-21 campaign.

Holcomb returns nearly all of its key contributors off of last season’s varsity squad that finished 16-9.

“We bring back a lot from last season’s squad,” Holcomb coach Alexa Stockton said. “We only lost two seniors and have added four freshmen.”

Members of the Holcomb squad are seniors Macy Houart, Bailey Cupples, Hannah Burk, and Gwendolyn Moore; juniors Allison Moody, Alyssa Brown, and Selena Burress; sophomores Taylor Campbell and Elizabeth Callis; and freshmen Kaetlyn Danley, Maleigh Lemings, Jules Gurley, and Bree Winchester.

“The cool thing about our group this year is all the players on the court are going to be key,” Stockton said. “We have a strong senior class and the players in the other grades also have strong players. I think one through 13 we should be pretty solid and we should go at least 10 deep.”

Holcomb won the Bootheel Conference regular-season title last season before falling to Caruthersville in a semifinal of the Bootheel Conference Tournament. Hayti eventually beat Caruthersville in the title game of the Bootheel Conference Tournament and also finished first in Holcomb’s district tournament.

“We won the regular-season title last season,” Stockton said. “Then we didn’t make it to championship of our conference tournament. One of our goals this season is get to the championship of our conference tournament. Hayti will definitely be one of the toughest teams we have to compete with in our conference again.”

Holcomb opens its season at its own two-day event. Holcomb plays Charleston at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 4 and hosts Scott County Central at 3 p.m. on Dec. 5.

“We’ve toughened up our schedule quite a bit,” Stockton said. “We start the season with some unfamiliar opponents. We are also fortunate enough to have 13 of our 18 regular-season games at home this season.”
