The Gideon volleyball team begins its quest to repeat as champs of its varsity volleyball tournament later this week.

The three-day tournament is slated to begin Thursday at Gideon High School and Clarkton High School.

Gideon enters the tournament without a loss at 11-0-1. The only blemish on its record is a pool play tie with Scott City at the Dig for Life Challenge in Cape Girardeau. Gideon eventually beat Twin Rivers in the title game of the that tournament on Sept. 12.

"The Gideon Lady Bulldogs have been playing with a limited number of players, but still look to make some noise in the Gideon Invitational Tournament," Gideon coach Kristen Ashabranner said. "We are hoping to have all our kids back for the tournament. The girls have been working hard and know what it takes to be successful. The tournament looks a bit different this year with Gideon and Clarkton both hosting, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but will still include some of the most competitive teams in the Tri-County area."

Five other squads in the Gideon Invitational also entered Tuesday with winning records. Twin Rivers is 9-2-2, Clarkton is 9-4-1, Holcomb is 5-2, Campbell is 5-3-2, and Risco is 3-1.

"It's always a good tournament," Holcomb coach Matt Casper said after taking on Kennett Monday night. "We are looking forward to getting another shot at Twin Rivers in our pool on Thursday. We know Gideon is playing really well. Clarkton and Campbell are also always strong teams. There are some good teams in the field. But we are looking forward to finally competing in a tournament that will allow us to play multiple games on the same day."

The tournament is divided into four pools of three teams.

Holcomb, Twin Rivers, and Hayti will compete in Pool 1 at Gideon Thursday and Clarkton, Portageville, and Cooter will compete in Pool 2 at Clarkton Thursday.

Campbell, Senath-Hornersville, and Risco will compete in Pool 3 at Clarkton Friday and Gideon, South Pemiscot, and Southland will compete in Pool 4 at Gideon Friday.

The top two finishers in each pool advance to bracket play on Saturday.

The championship is currently slated to take place Saturday at 2 p.m.
