Baseball Roundup, Sept. 12: Malden splits doubleheader

Malden 8, Doniphan 7

The Malden baseball squad rallied from a 7-5 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Doniphan 8-7 in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday.

The trouble started for Doniphan in the final frame when Ethan Campbell collected a base hit. Cooper Thomas followed by drawing a walk. RBI hits by Dylan Bader and Griffin Riley tied things up at seven-all.

Trey Miller then drew a walk to load the bases and Hope Hartman collected a game-winning RBI single.

Thomas collected the victory on the hill for Malden. He struck out five, walked three, hit one, and allowed two runs on three hits. He pitched the final three innings for Malden

Bader finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs. He hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning for Malden.

Oran 9, Malden 1

Malden fell to Oran 9-1 in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

Oran (8-0) built a 5-0 lead by the top of the fifth inning.

Colton Payne finished 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs for Oran. Carter Heuring was 2 for 3 with one RBI, Nolan Loper was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Nic Massey was 3 for 3 with one RBI, and Dawson Menz also collected one RBI for Oran.

Ethan Campbell went 2 for 2 with a RBI single to account for Malden’s only run.

Kaden Hargrove pitched the first five innings for Oran. He allowed one earned run, two hits, struck out eight and walked two.

Heuring pitched the final two innings without allowing a run. He struck out one.

Riley pitched the first five innings for Malden. He struck out five and walked one. He allowed five runs (four earned).

Bernie 7, Campbell 2

The Bernie Mules split a baseball doubleheader against Campbell on Saturday, winning the second game 7-2 at Bernie.

Campbell (4-1) won the opener 7-0.

The Mules (3-4) never trailed, scoring three runs in the first inning, three more in the second for a 6-1 lead and a single run in the fourth.

Wyatt Nimmo went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI to lead the Mules’ six-hit attack. Teammate John Nimmo drove home three runs without the benefit of a hit.

Madison Belcher went 3 for 3 with a double to lead Campbell’s seven-hit attack. Teammate Garrett Henderson went 2 for 2 with a double and one RBI.

Tad Davis picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks in five innings.

Ryan Weidenbenner was charged with the loss, permitting three runs — none earned — on one hit with no strikeouts and two walks in one-third of an inning.

Campbell 7, Bernie 0

Skylar Morrison struck out 12, all0wing only two hits and no walks, in seven innings to lead the Campbell Camels to a 7-0 win over the Bernie baseball team on Saturday at Bernie.

Tad Davis was charged with the loss, giving up five runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks in two innings.

Ivan Meyers and John Nimmo had one hit each for the Mules.

Garrett Henderson went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Campbell’s seven-hit offensive. Teammates Charles Parker went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, Kaden Siebert went 2 for 3 with one RBI and Luke Weidenbennett went 1 for 3 with a solo homer.

Bloomfield 5, Van Buren 4

The Bloomfield Wildcats scored the game-winning run in the top of the fifth inning of a 5-4 victory over Van Buren in a round robin Saturday at Bloomfield.

Dawson Hill singled, stole second base and scored on Ethan Shackles’ double to center field to give the Wildcats’ a 5-3 lead in the five-inning game.

Van Buren left the tying run at third base in the bottom of the fifth.

Bloomfield (2-2) took a 4-1 lead after a three-run third inning.

Christian Hartlein secured the win, giving up four runs — two earned — on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Hartlein, Will Robison and Shackles doubled, and Robison, Connor Scott and Shackles had one RBI each.

No Van Buren statistics were available.

Advance 16, Van Buren 1

The Advance baseball team scored seven runs in the first and third innings and rolled to a 16-1 victory over Van Buren on Saturday in a round robin at Bloomfield.

Jack Bailey homered and drove home three runs, as part of Advance’s nine-hit outing. Jed Garner went 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs, Tyler Davis went 2 for 2 with a double and one RBI and Hayden Laird doubled and had one RBI.

Bailey was the winning pitcher, yielding one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk in three innings when the game was called because of the 15-run mercy rule.

No Van Buren statistics were available.
