Sikeston at Dexter

Records: Sikeston 1-0; Dexter 0-1

Series History: Sikeston leads 52-21

Last Meeting: 2017, Dexter won 12-0

Last Week: Sikeston defeated Caruthersville 17-6; Dexter lost to Scott City 18-15.

Notes: For the first time in three seasons, the Sikeston football team plays Dexter. Last week, Dexter fell by three points, 18-15, on the road. The Bearcats are led by sophomore Logan Josupait, who rushed for 110 yards on 18 carries last week against the Rams, while also throwing for 93 yards on 6-of-9 passing. Josupait added an eight-yard touchdown run in the second quarter as well. Josupait isn’t the only option under-center for the Bearcats, as senior Peyton Driskill should also see some action at quarterback. Driskill rushed for 25 yards on seven carries and passed for 37 yards on 4-of-16 passing last week. Sikeston is going to have to contain the run heading into their Week 2 matchup. Last week, Dexter rushed for 222 yards on 41 carries. The Bulldogs defense will look to do the same thing they did in Week 1 against Caruthersville, where they controlled nearly the entire game. Dexter finished with four fumbles, two lost, against Scott City, while also hurting themselves with penalties. Dexter finished with 13 penalties for a total of 118 yards. The Bulldogs’ defense was the key to their victory last week against the Tigers, with the Sikeston offense mustering only 231 yards of total offense. On defense, Sikeston forced four Tiger fumbles while recovering one. Sikeston had 12 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and one game-sealing interception by senior Daniel Lawrence. Sophomore Trace Sullivan led the team with 14 tackles, four tackles for loss, and tied the team-high in sacks — with two. Senior Hudson Kuykendall had 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, and forced fumble, while sophomore Joseph Heckemeyer had eight tackles, two for loss, one sack, and one forced fumble as well. Senior Vashawn Upchurch also finished with a strong defensive showing. He had four tackles, three for loss, and one sack. Fellow senior Jackson Kuykendall also impacted that side of the ball, with two sacks, one forced fumble, and six tackles. A pair of safeties also helped in the win, as senior Lontas McClinton came away with one, while a trio of Bulldogs helped with the other. Offensively, the Bulldogs scored on two rushing touchdowns. Junior Satron Hampton scored the first touchdown and finished with 29 yards on eight carries. McClinton provided the other score and finished with 74 yards on 10 carries.

East Prairie at New Madrid County Central

Records: East Prairie 0-1; New Madrid County Central 1-0

Series History: New Madrid County Central leads 6-3

Last Meeting: 2019, New Madrid County Central won 46-6

Last Week: East Prairie lost to Park Hills Central 43-2; New Madrid County Central defeated Portageville 58-0.

Notes: He picked up right where he left off. New Madrid County Central senior running back Quazavion Jackson didn’t have any rust to shake off last Friday against Portageville, as he rushed for 163 yards on eight carries and scored four touchdowns. He averaged nearly 20 yards per carry and showed why he was one of the area's toughest runners. He had help, though. Junior Corvel Williams had a strong night on the ground, rushing for 106 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns. He also averaged nearly 12 yards per carry. Behind-center, junior Matt Riley didn’t have to sling the football all that much. Riley threw for 84 yards on 6-of-10 passing and two touchdowns. Junior Kenyon King was the recipient of both Riley touchdown passes, as he caught four passes for 72 yards. The Eagles defense was also stout. Led by senior Jairus Burgess’ 11 tackles and five tackles for loss, NMCC went on to a Week 1 rout of the Bulldogs. Overall, the Eagles finished with 20 tackles for loss. This week brings a new test, though, as the Eagles look to slow down a tough East Prairie running game.

Hayti at Portageville

Records: Hayti 1-0; Portageville 0-1

Series History: Portageville leads series 44-31-3

Last Meeting: 2019, Hayti won 62-8

Last Week: Hayti defeated Thayer 30-28; Portageville lost to New Madrid County Central 58-0

Notes: It was a struggle for Portageville all night last week against New Madrid County Central, and it doesn’t get any easier in Week 2 against Hayti. The Bulldogs finished with 34 yards of total offense. They had 11 rushing yards and 23 passing yards. Sophomore Bryce Hunt finished with three carries for 27 yards, while fellow sophomore Thomas Frakes threw for 23 yards, on 2-of-7 passing. He threw one interception as well. Junior Josh Adams caught one pass for three yards, while sophomore Trey Benthal added one catch for 14 yards. Now, the Bulldogs gameplan against a tough Hayti team, which is coming off a 30-28 road win at Thayer last week. The Indians had 393 yards of total offense — 257 passing and 136 rushing yards. Junior quarterback Tray’von Thomas threw 257 yards on 13-of-22 passing, with three touchdown passes and one interception. His favorite target was sophomore Elijah Burnett, who caught four passes for 126 yards and one touchdown. Fellow sophomore Treavion Barber caught three passes for 82 yards and one touchdown, while senior Tyleik Moore caught four passes for 56 yards and one score. Thomas also rushed for 46 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown on the ground, while sophomore Quintral Clay rushed for a team-high 57 yards on 12 carries. Special teams also helped the Indians, as Burnett took a 75-yard kick return to the house to make up the guests' scoring.

Charleston at Chaffee

Records: Charleston 0-1; Chaffee 1-0

Series History: Charleston leads 23-6-3

Last Meeting: 2013, Charleston won 43-28

Last Week: Charleston lost to St. Pius X (Festus) 45-26; Chaffee defeated Crystal City 46-8

Notes: After losing a Week 1 matchup against St. Pius X (Festus) on the road, Charleston returns to the field, against Chaffee, in Week 2. If there were any silver-lining in the Blue Jays loss to the Lancers, it would have to be the performances from head coach Justin Hutchings’ underclassmen. Sophomore Almareion Williams threw for 105 yards on 4-of-10 passing, two touchdowns, and one interception, while sophomore Rico Coleman threw for 49 yards on 6-of-17 passing, one touchdown, and one interception. Sophomore Rommie Turner caught one of the touchdowns and finished with four receptions for 39 yards. Sophomores Fletravion Stanbeck and Roylandus Wiley also caught touchdown passes. Stanbeck finished with two catches for 60 yards, while Wiley had one catch for 26 yards. On the ground, senior A’Moses Wells rushed for 31 yards on eight carries to lead the team. On defense, senior EK Davis had a solid night. He had 16 tackles, six tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery that wound up becoming a 45-yard touchdown return. Junior A’Jahnoah Wells had 14 tackles, four tackles for loss, and one sack, while senior Nick Crisel had 10 tackles and two tackles for loss. Junior Tom Murry and Williams also added two interceptions to the defensive totals. Last week, Chaffee senior Bryce Horrell led the way. He finished with 96 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns. Series History: Malden leads 3-2

Last Meeting: 2019, Kelly won 35-14

Last Week: Kelly defeated Doniphan 34-14; Malden lost to Kennett 64-8

Notes: Kelly is looking for its third-straight win over Malden in Week 2. The Hawks are coming off a 20-point victory over Doniphan in Week 1, thanks to their special teams' play. Junior Bryce Phelps finished with two punt return touchdowns, on both of his chances, for 120 yards. Senior Evan Urhahn had a big night in the Hawks' backfield, eclipsing the 100-yard mark, with 103 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown.
