COVID-19 delayed Rib City Shootout to tip off June 17 at Poplar Bluff
CORRECTS location of volleyball shootout in Poplar Bluff.
The Rib City Shootout will begin next week at the Libla Family Sports Complex on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.
A girls basketball shootout will be on June 17-18 and the boys basketball shootout will be on June 18-19.
The event was scheduled to start May 29-30 with a boys basketball shootout at Libla and a girls basketball shootout at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff. However, the first few shootouts were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shootout director Chad Allen isn’t sure what to expect this summer. He isn’t sure how many teams will participate.
“We’re starting to have quite a few sign up,” Allen said. “Some school districts may be skeptical about coming. I’m not sure what it’s going to be like this summer. It’s definitely going to be different than past summers. Now with the governor beginning Phase 2, it opened things up a little more, but we’ve still got to follow the CDC guidelines.”
Additional shootouts are scheduled to be held at the Bearcat Event Center and the Cape Girardeau SportsPlex.
Allen said Libla and the SportsPlex will allow fans for the shootouts. Libla will permit 50% capacity in its building.
The BEC will probably not allow fans in the building, according to Allen.
Allen had planned a shootout at Murray (Kentucky) High School before the pandemic began but it was canceled. He plans to hold a shootout there next year.
The first shootout at the BEC will be July 8-9 featuring girls volleyball. The SportsPlex will host three volleyball shootouts with the first scheduled for June 19-20.
