Squires, ex-Southeast golf coach, passes away

Gary Squires, a St. Louis-born Korean War veteran, service station owner and well-known area golfer, passed away Tuesday at Chateau Girardeau.

Squires, 87, was formerly the golf pro at Cape Country Club, Dalhousie and Arena Golf.

He also acted as a coach for several area golf teams, including the now-discontinued program at Southeast Missouri State.

For more than a quarter-century, Squires owned and operated Gary’s Shell Service in Cairo, Illinois.

A widower since the death of his wife, Mary Ann, in 2003, Squires leaves three daughters, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A daughter and grandson also predeceased Squires.

Due to coronavirus concerns, visitation is being restricted to family at Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

A private burial with military honors will be held Thursday at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mounds, Illinois.
