Springer, Southeast HOF'er, passes away

Fred C. Springer, Jr., a member of the Southeast Missouri State University Athletics Hall of Fame, died Thursday at Life Care Center in Cape Girardeau.

Springer, 70, was a member of SEMO’s 1969 men’s track and field team, winners of the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (MIAA) indoor and outdoor track titles.

Springer and his team, coached by Marvin Rosengarten – for whom an athletic complex at SEMO is named - were inducted into the university’s HOF in 2010.

Twenty-eight members of the ’69 team qualified for the NCAA championships and at the time, the squad held school records in 13 different track-and-field events.

Springer, a 1968 Cape Central graduate, received his degree from Southeast in 1971.

The former scholar-athlete worked with his mother, Helen, at Springer Insurance and Realty.

Funeral services will be private.
