Kennett's Hayden Higgins reaches Day 2 of Class 2 state wrestling tournament

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Kennett sophomore Hayden Higgins remains in contention at the Class 2 state wrestling tournament at Mizzou Arena in Columbia after going 1-1 Thursday.

Deacon Haag (25-21), of Mexico, beat Higgins (25-15) by fall in 3:42 in Round 1 of the 182-pound weight class Thursday. Higgins rebounded by beating Jesse Glise (27-14), of Savannah, by fall in 2:24 in the first round of wrestlebacks. Higgins continues action Friday.

Kennett freshman Gavin Patterson and Kennett junior Chase Malone concluded their season at the state tournament Thursday.

Matthew Hornbeck (38-11), of Whitfield, beat Patterson by fall in 1:41 in Round 1 of the 106-pound weight class. Braylin Brooks (21-10), of Nevada, beat Patterson by fall in 2:24 in the first round of wrestlebacks. Patterson finishes his season with a record of 16-17

Jay Strausbaugh (51-0), of Logan-Rogersville, beat Malone by fall in 2:15 in Round 1 of the 132-pound weight class. Cole Gramling (33-11), of St. Charles West, beat Malone by technical fall in 5:00 in the first round of wrestlebacks. Malone finishes his season with a record of 23-20.
