Poplar Bluff boys end slide with fast start; Kiley Bess reaches 1,900 career points in loss

SEDALIA, Mo. — Kendrick Brown, Joseph Hardimon and the Poplar Bluff boys basketball team got off to a good start Saturday morning.

Hardimon scored seven first-quarter points as the Mules jumped out to a double-digit lead and rolled past Foundations College Prep of Chicago 74-28 to place seventh at the McDonald's Classic at Smith-Cotton High School.

“The kids responded,” Mules coach William Durden said. “It was a couple of early stops that got us rolling leading to transition layups.”

Having not led at any point in the first two games of the tournament, the Mules built an 18-4 lead in the first quarter.

Brown started the scoring at the foul line, Hardimon scored seven points in the quarter while Chance Campbell had a pair of baskets.

“You go up 6-2 instead of being down 8-2 it makes a big difference,” Durden said.

Brown finished with 15 points, Hardimon added 11, all in the first half, while Campbell scored 10 and Gage Rivers added seven.

Poplar Bluff led 50-18 at halftime and allowed just three second-half field goals in outscoring Foundations 24-10.

The Mules (4-7) will open SEMO Conference play Tuesday by hosting Jackson.
