Missourian Roundup: Saxony, Notre Dame swimmers grab top finishes at Poplar Bluff

Saxony Lutheran got a pair of first-place finishes from Savannah Spencer in a girl’s swim meet Tuesday at Poplar Bluff.

Notre Dame finished second as a team and was paced by Jane West, who earned a first-place finish in the 500 free.

The Bulldogs scored 274 points to finish second to Poplar Bluff, who won the meet with 413 points.

Notre Dame will participate in a meet with Cape Central and Jackson at Westminster Christian Academy today at 4 p.m.

Saxony Lutheran will travel to MICDS Jan. 23.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Meadow Heights 45, Oak Ridge 34

Meadow Heights (3-6) took over in the second half of their home-court victory against Oak Ridge. Leading by just a field goal before halftime, the Panthers added nine to their margin to defeat the BlueJays 45-34.

The hosts were led by junior Gracie Cook who ripped the nets for a game-high twenty-eight points. Ashley Gruenke added nine including Meadow Heights lone trey.

Sophomore Paige Glueck paced Oak Ridge (1-6) with a seventeen point effort.

Meadow Heights next travels to South Iron on Thursday. Oak Ridge is set to visit Scott City that same evening.

Eagle Ridge held the home team scoreless during the second quarter in a 14-point road win over Providence. The 9-0 run padded their lead to ten by halftime and the visitors coasted thereafter. Rachel Margrabe led Eagle Ridge by tallying seventeen points. K. Start had thirteen in a losing cause. Neither team registered a three-pointer.

The difference in the game came at the free-throw line. The Panthers (6-7) netted 15 of 26 from the charity stripe compared to just two of four by visiting Valley of Caledonia (5-7). Both teams totaled thirty-eight points on field goals. Viking fouls down the stretch allowed the Panthers to ice the game with singletons.

Meadow Heights placed a trio of scorers in double-digits led by 5-foot-8 sophomore Tristen Mayfield with 19. Jacob Barks added 15 and Wyatt Lincoln found the range for 11. Skyler DeClue led a balanced Caledonia attack with nine points.

Friday evening is homecoming at Meadow Heights as the Panthers take on Woodland.

The Bluejays (7-6) defeated host Leopold (4-7), 69-53.

Schamburg led Oak Ridge with 13 points, while Mason Deck scored 15 points for the Wildcats.

The Bluejays had great first and third quarters, but Leopold dominated the second and fourth. However, the score was close at halftime, with Oak Ridge leading 33-27.

The Bluejays will play at Zalma on Friday while Leopold faces Marquand-Zion.
