STATESMAN ROUNDUP: Jack Below scores 53 in Advance's 73-64 win over Chaffee; Puxico, Richland win again
Jack Below surpassed the 50-point mark for the second time this season, leading the Advance boys basketball team to a 73-64 win over Chaffee on Tuesday night at Advance High School.
Below scored a game-high 53 points after scoring 58 in the Hornets’ 87-84 loss to Kelly in the semifinals of the Oran Invitational.
Hunter Curtis joined Below in double figures with 11 points.
Wyatt Parker paced Chaffee with 23 points, and Jagger Sadler added 12.
Advance (10-3) led 21-16 after one quarter, 39-32 after two and 54-47 after three.
Richland 64, Zalma 48
The Richland boys basketball team won its second straight game, holding Zalma to six third-quarter points in a 64-48 victory Tuesday night at Zalma.
The Rebels (3-7) led 17-16 after one quarter and 36-31 at halftime before outscoring Zalma 16-6 in the third to take a 52-37 lead into the fourth.
Skylar Oakley led a balanced Richland attack with 15 points, Damon Ivy had 12, and Chris Siebert and Andrew Partenberry had 10 each. Tanner Freeman added eight.
Nate Ware paced Zalma (2-10) with a game-high 24 points.
Puxico 80, Bell City 50
The Puxico Indians won for the third time in four games and evened their SCAA record at 1-1 with an 80-50 win over the Bell City boys basketball team Tuesday night at Puxico.
Ethan Helm scored a team-high 30 points, including eight 3-pointers, for the Indians. Lucas Plunkett scored 20 points, including five 3-pointers. Dalton Andrews added 15 points.
Luke Nichols scored a game- and season-high 33 points, including a 12-of-13 performance from the free throw line.
Puxico (5-8) held quarter leads of 17-8, 38-20 and 60-39.
Bell City fell to 2-10 and 0-3.
Kennett 60, Bernie 41
The Kennett Indians outscored the Bernie boys basketball team 18-6 in the third quarter and made 5 of 8 free throws in the fourth in a 60-41 win Tuesday night at Bernie High School.
The Indians led 12-11 after one quarter and 27-23 at halftime before pulling ahead 45-29 entering the final quarter.
Blake Harty paced the Mules (11-3) with 12 points, and Tyler Suiter had 10.
Jackson Henfling scored a game-high 20 points for Kennett, who improved to 12-4.
Portageville 55, Puxico 29
The Puxico girls basketball team took the early lead, but Portageville rebounded in the second quarter to beat the Indians 55-29 Tuesday night at Portageville.
The Indians led 13-11 after one quarter behind seven first-quarter points by Alivia Taylor.
“Great start tonight by our girls,” Puxico coach Jim Carrier said. “I’m proud of the way they came out, played patient, yet aggressive basketball. The first quarter tonight was possibly the best quarter of basketball we’ve played all year.”
The Bulldogs (4-7) outscored Puxico 19-2 in the second quarter to take a 30-15 halftime lead. Portageville held a 25-14 scoring advantage after halftime.
Taylor finished with a team-high nine points for Puxico, who fell to 0-9.
Gabrielle Madison scored a game-high 16 points for Portageville.
