MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Notre Dame girls basketball team claims victory against Park Hills

The Notre Dame girls basketball team used a strong second quarter to overcome a slow start in a 52-45 home victory over Central (Park Hills) on Thursday.

The Bulldogs outscored the Rebels 19-9 in the second period to ovecome a six-point deficit ant take a four-point lead into halftime. Five players scored in the period for Notre Dame, which led 26-22 at the break.

The hosts added three to their margin thereafter to secure a seven point victory. Lexi Rubel recorded a double-double as the sophomore contributed 10 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Riley Burger led the Bulldogs with 17 points and added eight boards.

Central's Sophia Horton led all scorers with 21.

The visitors were 11 of 16 from the free throw line, while the Bulldogs hit 13 of 16.

Cape Girardeau Central only produced a single field goal at home in the third quarter in falling victim to a strong Poplar Bluff defense.

Ella Vogel's eight points led Central and was followed by Taylor Horton and Olivia Koch with seven each.

Bluff's Kiley Bess paced all scorers with 20 points.

Tyler Landewee and Caleb LeGrand registered double figures in the scoring column in the Bulldogs loss to Helias in the Houlihan's Invitational Tournament at Springfield Catholic High School.

Landewee finished with 15 points and LeGrand netted 10.

Jeff Szumigala nailed six treys while scoring a game-high 20 points for the victors.

Helias led by a single point heading into the last frame and outscored Notre Dame by five in the final eight minutes.

The Bulldogs converted just three of nine free throws, while Helias hit eight of nine from the stripe.
