Southeast struggles continue in latest league loss

Southeast Missouri State sophomore guard Alex Caldwell

A struggling season for the Southeast Missouri State men’s basketball squad continued Saturday in an 81-59 loss at Murray State.

The Redhawks (4-11, 0-2 Ohio Valley Conference) played the defending league champions tight through the opening 12:30 of the contest.

Sophomore guard Alex Caldwell buried a jumper to pull Southeast to within 23-22 at that point. However, the Racers (9-5, 2-0) took off on an 11-2 run over the next 3:07 and the hosts were never threatened again.

Murray State stretched its lead into double digits within the first 40 seconds of the second half and led by as many as 22.

The Southeast offense continued its season-long slump, as the Redhawks shot just 39 percent from the field and missed 13 of its 17 3-point attempts. However, defensively, they were just as poor.

Southeast allowed the Racers to shoot a season-high (vs. Division I competition) 60 percent from the field and Murray outrebounded the Redhawks 39-25.

Of the 23 Southeast made shots, just six came through an assist and it didn’t score a point over the final 4:21 of the game.

Caldwell paced Southeast with 18 points and three assists, while fifth-year senior center Quatarrius Wilson had 10 points in the loss.

Fifth-year senior Skyler Hogan grabbed six rebounds for Southeast, while junior forward Isaiah Gable scored 11 points and sophomore forward Sage Tolbert added nine points and five rebounds.

The Redhawks have not won a game against NCAA Division I competition since Nov. 30 and have now lost seven of its past eight games.

Southeast host OVC-power Belmont Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
