BCT consolation quarterfinal roundup: Malden keeps consolation title hopes alive

BLOOMFIELD, Mo. - The No. 8 seeded Malden Green Wave rebounded nicely less than 24 hours after suffering a 56-54 upset loss to No. 9 seeded East Prairie in an opening-round contest at the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament Thursday.

Malden built a 45-22 lead by halftime on its way past No. 16 seeded Richland 70-32 in a consolation quarterfinal Friday afternoon.

“It felt good to come out and play well,” Malden coach Cole McBroom said. “We had a tough loss Thursday night. It was also our fourth straight loss so it’s great to break that skid and play well together as a group. Richland is banged up right now and they’ve got some issues to fix now but they will be tough when they get healthy.”

Malden, which feasted off of transition buckets created by its pressure defense, had four players tally at least a dozen points.

Coy Wade led the way with 19 points. Drew Blankinship added 16 points, Marques Jones recorded 14 points, and Sientez Lerma finished with 12 points for the Green Wave.

Skylar Oakley paced Richland (1-6) with 18 points. He hit half of the Rebels’ six treys.

Malden (3-6) will play No. 12 seeded South Pemiscot in a consolation semifinal Saturday at 1 p.m. The second consolation semifinal between No. 10 seeded Gideon and No. 11 seeded Twin Rivers follows Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

“We are playing a really good South Pemiscot team Saturday,” McBroom said. “I know they are the No. 12 seed but they might be the most under seeded team in the tournament. We will have to play well but we are looking forward to a chance to win and get to play all four days of this tournament. Our goal at the beginning of the year was to play on the last night of every tournament. We are able to do that at Oran and want to try to get the final night at Bloomfield with a win on Saturday night.”
