BCT: Gideon holds off 15th-seeded Holcomb in consolation quarterfinals

Fifteenth-seeded Holcomb gave the Gideon Bulldogs a scare in the consolation quarterfinals of the 63rd Bloomfield Christmas Tournament.

The Hornets (0-7) took a nine-point lead after one quarter and stayed close throughout the second half before 10th-seeded Gideon held on for a 78-72 victory Friday at Bloomfield High School.

Gideon (6-4) will meet Twin Rivers in a consolation quarterfinal at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Malden will meet South Pemiscot in the other consolation quarterfinal at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Eli Bader scored seven of his 20 points in the first quarter and Dylan Bradshaw had five of his team-high 23, as the Bulldogs carried a 20-11 lead into the second quarter.

Gideon rallied in the second quarter to take a 33-29 halftime lead behind 13 of Sam Williams’ game-high 31 points.

The Bulldogs padded their lead by three points in the third and took a 62-55 lead into the fourth.

Gideon’s Zach Swift and Brevin Vires scored six points each in the fourth. Each finished with 16 points.

Gideon went 8 for 9 from the foul stripe in the final quarter and 18 for 23 overall.

Twin Rivers 57, Puxico 52

Eleventh-seeded Twin Rivers outscored 14th-seeded Puxico by 13 points in the second half to beat the Indians 57-52 in a consolation quarterfinal.

The Royals (5-5) led 16-15 after one quarter and 22-20 at halftime before outscoring Puxico 35-22 in the final two quarters.

Jolby Jones scored a game-high 18 points for Twin Rivers.

Matt Caldwell paced Puxico (2-7) with 12 points and Ethan Helm had 11.

Reserve A.J. Wilbourn scored 18 points to lead 12th-seeded South Pemiscot to a 67-49 win over 13th-seeded Bloomfield in a consolation quarterfinal.

Colton Hyslop paced Bloomfield (1-6) with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Jeffrey Jarrell scored 12 points and Gage McNeil had 10.

Malden 70, Richland 32

The 16th-seeded Richland Rebels’ depleted roster took another lopsided loss in a 70-32 consolation quarterfinal loss to eighth-seeded Malden.

The Rebels (1-6) are without three starters — Jackson Bell, Tanner Freeman and Andrew Partenberry are injured.

Skylar Oakley paced Richland with 18 points.

Coy Wade scored a game-high 19 points for Malden, who improved to 3-6.
