Jackson, Notre Dame athletes earn Semoball recognition

In the Athlete of the Week balloting (non-basketball), Jackson football player Blake Blackman earned the male honor by receiving 522 votes.

The sophomore defensive back picked off a pair of passes, returning one for a touchdown, in the Indians’ 27-21 overtime loss to Carthage in the MSHSAA Class 5 football state championship game.

Blackman outdistanced Dexter wrestler Travis Waldner (97 votes), Sikeston wrestler Eddie Foster (96), Poplar Bluff wrestler Gavyn Hays (15), and Kennett’s Preston Ragland.

In the female poll, Notre Dame swimmer Lexi Jansen won the top spot with 536 votes.

Jansen led off the winning 400 free relay in a three-way meet against Saxony Lutheran and Poplar Bluff.

Saxony Lutheran swimmer Savannah Spencer (368) and Poplar Bluff swimmer Paige Bradley (12) trailed.
