Updating former area basketball players through the first three weeks of college basketball season

SIKESTON — 11 area basketball players are making impacts with their respective college programs. Below is a recap of how each one is doing through the first three weeks of the college basketball season.

FRED THATCH JR. (SIKESTON, SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY)

A sophomore at Saint Louis University, one of the greatest players to come out of Sikeston High School, is averaging 8.7 points per game and five rebounds per contest for an undefeated Billikens team.

Thatch’s high-mark of the season so far was in the first game of the year against Florida Gulf Coast. He recorded 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting and six rebounds in 19 minutes.

Parker Long

PARKER LONG (SIKESTON, MARYVILLE UNIVERSITY)

Off to a great start to his college career, Long neared the freshman scoring record at Maryville University, on Nov. 10, scoring 32 points against Tiffin. He shot 9 of 21 from the floor, 2 of 7 from three, and a perfect 12 of 12 at the free-throw line.

Long also added four rebounds and seven assists.

So far this season Long is averaging 21 points per game and 3.3 rebounds. Long scored 13 points in his first game against Walsh and notched 18 against Hannibal-La Grange in his last game.

Owen Long

OWEN LONG (SIKESTON, MARYVILLE UNIVERSITY)

Parker’s twin brother, Owen, is also having a fine start to the season for Maryville. He is averaging 10.3 points per game and 2.3 rebounds.

Owen had 14 points in his first game against Walsh while adding 13 against Tiffin. In his last game, Owen struggled, scoring four points on 2 of 9 shooting.

KEVIN JONES (SIKESTON, THREE RIVERS COLLEGE)

Appearing in three games this season for Three Rivers Community College, the freshman is averaging 5.3 points per game. His highest total of the season came against Southeastern Community College when he scored nine points on 3 of 7 shooting.

Jones is averaging 2.3 rebounds and two assists per game, while also shooting 35.3 percent from the floor and 36.4 from three.

Jacob Shoemaker

JACOB SHOEMAKER (ORAN, THREE RIVERS COLLEGE)

The former Oran standout is averaging 1.6 points per game in five appearances this season. He scored a season-high five points against Wabash Valley College.

Shoemaker is averaging 1.6 points per game to go along with 2.2 rebounds per contest.

TREY JENKINS (SIKESTON, SOUTHWESTERN ILLINOIS C.C.)

In four games this season, former Sikeston Bulldog Trey Jenkins has scored 14 points (against Craig Tyson Prep) and nine points (against Mineral Area).

Against Craig Tyson Prep, Jenkins added three rebounds and two steals, while against Mineral Area, he had three rebounds and two blocks. Jenkins has not played in the last two games for Southwestern Illinois Community College.

Derez Tipler

DEREZ TIPLER (EAST PRAIRIE, BLACK HAWK-MOLINE C.C.)

Tipler played the most minutes he’s played this season (26) against Arkansas State Mid-South on Nov. 9. He made the most of his time, scoring 11 points on 3 of 6 shooting.

Before that game, Tipler scored six points against Olive-Harvey, four against Prairie State, two against Saint Ambrose JV, and one against Milwaukee Area Tech.

Overall, in five games this season, Tipler is averaging 4.8 points per game, 3.2 rebounds, and shooting 40 percent from three.

Demarcus Sharp

DEMARCUS SHARP (CHARLESTON, COLBY C.C.)

Averaging nearly a triple-double this season, the former Charleston Bluejay has two triple-doubles this season. He is averaging 12 points per game, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.8 assists while shooting 48.8 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from three.

Against Iowa Western, Sharp had 16 points, on 7 of 11 shooting, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists. For his second triple-double, against Sterling JV, Sharp had 14 points, on 5 of 10 shooting, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists.

In his most recent game, Sharp had an off-night, scoring two points on 1 of 9 shooting, to go along with one rebound and four assists.

LEAH CAUBLE (ORAN, UNION UNIVERSITY)

The all-time leading scorer in Missouri girls basketball history, Cauble had played in three games for Union University this season. She played 11 minutes in her most recent game, scoring six points on 2 of 3 shooting from three.

Cauble added one rebound and two assists for the Bulldogs. She has scored nine total points this season in 17 minutes.

HANNAH THURMON (DEXTER, THREE RIVERS COLLEGE)

Thurmon is off to a great start to her sophomore season at Three Rivers Community College. She is averaging 10.8 points per game, six rebounds, and 3.4 assists while shooting 42.5 percent from the floor.

In her first game of the season, against Olney Central, Thurmon had 10 points, on 3 of 6 shooting, five rebounds, and four assists.

She then neared a double-double in her next game against Southeastern Illinois, with 15 points, on 5 of 9 shooting, and nine rebounds.

After not reaching double-digit scoring for the first time, against Rend Lake, scoring three points on 1 of 7 shooting and hauling five rebounds, she returned to normal form against Wabash Valley. She scored 16 points on 5 of 13 shooting and grabbed five boards.

In her most recent game, Thurmon had 10 points on 3 of 5 shooting, against Lindenwood-Belleville JV, and six rebounds. She has started every game for the Lady Raiders as well.

CHAYLEA MOSBY (DEXTER, THREE RIVERS COLLEGE)

After not reaching double-digits in the scoring column her first two games, Dexter’s all-time leading scorer has had three-straight games reaching that mark.

Against Rend Lake, Mosby had 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting, 11 rebounds, and four steals, while against Wabash Valley, she totaled 13 points on 3 of 6 shooting.

In her most recent contest, against Lindenwood-Belleville JV, she had 21 points on 5 of 7 shooting and five steals.

Mosby is averaging 13 points per game, five rebounds, 2.6 assists, on 48.8 percent shooting, 42.9 percent from three, and 88.9 percent from the charity stripe for the Lady Raiders.
