MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: St. Pius upends Kelly softball in district championship game

Molly Flanagan blasted a solo home run among her three hits as second-seeded St. Pius X defeated top-seeded Kelly 2-1, denying the Hawks their 32nd district title in the Class 2 District 2 Tournament championship game in Benton, Missouri.

A.J. Agers went the distance on the mound to earn the win for St. Pius X (15-6). The one run she gave up was unearned and she recorded seven strikeouts and one walk.

Kelly Ivy also hurled a complete game to suffer the loss for Kelly. Both runs were earned and she had four strikeouts and one walk.

Kelly ended its season at 18-12.

St. Pius X will face District 1 champion East Carter in the Class 2 sectionals Wednesday.

Addie Johnson recorded 13 kills and seven digs as the third-seeded Cardinals needed three sets but ultimately prevailed over the fourth-seeded Mules to claim third place at the SCAA Conference Tournament on Friday in Bell City, Missouri.

Maddison Altenthal compiled 12 kills, five digs, four blocks and three service aces for Woodland (22-3-3), which bounced back into the winning column a night after having its nine-game winning streak snapped by second-seeded Dexter. Emma Brown contributed eight digs and five kills for the Cardinals, while Ally Whitener added 18 assists, five digs and four kills. Mallorie Miles notched 16 digs to pace the Cardinals defensively, and Kaitlyn Zajicek posted a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs.

Bernie (18-7) will have a chance for revenge against Woodland on Monday when the Mules host the Cardinals.

Later in the tournament, top-seeded Advance (28-2) swept Dexter 25-15, 25-16 to retain its second-straight championship.

CROSS COUNTRY

JCAA Conference Tournament

Perryville junior Courtney Wright posted a sixth-place time of 20 minutes, 54.01 seconds to fare the best among local athletes as the Pirates finished fifth at the JCAA Conference Tournament on Friday at West City Park in Festus, Missouri.

The St. Vincent boys also placed fifth in the final team standings, led by Jack Baer and his 21st-place time of 18 minutes, 30.54 seconds.

Host Festus swept both gender divisions to retain their conference title. Tigers' senior Simon Ogle won the boys' race (16:18.98) and DeSoto senior Lillie Kaempfe won the girls' race (19:54.78).
