BENTON, Mo. – After a disappointing loss to Charleston last week the Kelly Hawks rebounded in a big way Friday night against visiting Doniphan.

Evan Urhahn rushed for 195 yards and three scores while the Hawk defense forced three turnovers to down the Dons 42-6, moving two games over the .500 mark for the season.

“We did a lot of good things defensively and ran the ball well,” Hawks’ head coach Lance Powers said. “Evan had a great night. Bryce Morgan was real efficient in the passing game. He was able to spread the ball and hit at least four different receivers.

“I’m proud of him. He looked like he felt real comfortable out there and did a lot of good things.”

Doniphan, still searching for their first win, played Kelly (4-2) close most of the first half, the final four minutes of the second quarter trailing by a point at 7-6.

Urhahn gave his team some breathing room with a two-yard touchdown run to cap a 38-yard drive with 3:58 before the break.

On the Dons (0-6) next possession Kelly’s defense found the scoreboard when Drew Dirnberger picked off a pass and took it back 24-yards for a score.

Following the point-after the Hawks led 21-6 with 1:45 left in the half.

“That pick-six, you couldn’t wipe the smile of Drew’s face after he got to the sideline,” Powers said. “I’m so proud and happy for him. He’s such a hard worker and has done a great job for us in the secondary. When you go plus in the turnovers it’s a good night for sure.”

Coming out of the half the Hawks continued to surge with Urhahn scoring his third touchdown of the night, a 63-yard run to finish off his team’s opening possession.

Morgan connected with Gavin Jansen and Ty Powers on 11 and five yard passes for the final two scores of the night, leaving the Hawks up 42-6 to start the fourth to ensure a mercy-clock finish.

Powers had a pick to go along with his touchdown catch on a night where Kelly forced three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

“I think our defense played well in the first half,” Dons’ head coach Jeremy Stout said. “We gave up the three big plays there and threw an interception. Turnovers have been a heel for us. We have some injuries we have to bounce back from.

“The injury bug has kind of hit us. We have people taking care of business in positions they’re not used to. We just have to bounce back and get ready to go next week.”

Kelly out-gained Doniphan 277-198 in totals yards with the bulk of their work coming on the ground.

Urhahn’s 195 yards came on 17 carries.

As a team the Hawks 24 times for 207 yards while Morgan was 8 of 12 through the air for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Alex Harris and Jordan White rushed for 49 and 48 yards respectively to lead Doniphan ground game that amassed 135 yards.

Trey Mills scored the Dons’ lone touchdown on a 19-yard run1:27 left in the first quarter to close his team within a point, 7-6.

Kelly scored on five of their six drives on the night, not counting their kneel down to end the game after forcing a late turnover on downs.

“Hats off to Doniphan,” Powers said of being a young program searching for wins. “We’ve been there. They played a great first half. Hats off to those kids and coaching staff.

“We’ve been down that road before and I know that win is coming really soon.”
