STATESMAN ROUNDUP: Bell City wins error-filled game with Greenville to stay unbeaten

The Bell City Cubs remained unbeaten after a sloppy 11-4 win over the Greenville baseball team Tuesday in Bell City.

The teams combined for 15 errors (seven by Bell City) and only three of the game’s 15 runs were earned.

Austin Hunt was the winning pitcher, allowing four unearned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk in five innings.

Brandon Dorris was charged with the loss, permitting seven unearned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk in four innings.

Jack Duenne went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to account for one-third of Bell City’s offense. Nate Stone went 2 for 3, and Luke Nichols tripled in four at-bats.

Bell City improved to 7-0, while Greenville fell to 0-6.

Cooter 8, Advance 2

A pair of Cooter pitchers combined for a three-hitter, and the Wildcats beat the Advance baseball team 8-2 Tuesday at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau.

Layton Robinson picked up the win, yielding two hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Bryson Plunkett allowed two runs — one earned — on one hit with two strikeouts and no walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Gus Garner was credited with the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in 5 2/3 innings.

The Wildcats, who finished third in the Class 1 state tournament in the spring, scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

Garner went 2 for 2 to lead the Hornets, and Hunter Curtis doubled in two at-bats with one RBI.

Advance fell to 4-5 and Cooter improved to 14-1.

Campbell 4, Bernie 0

The Bernie Mules didn’t receive many opportunities on offense in their 4-0 loss to the Campbell baseball team Tuesday in Campbell.

Jacob Vines and Skylar Morrison combined to pitch a one-hitter and Campbell didn’t walk a batter or commit an error.

Vines was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit and striking out four in six innings.

John Nimmo took the loss, permitting three runs — one earned — on nine hits with two strikeouts and no walks in five innings.

Tyler Suiter had the Mules’ only hit.

Bernie fell to 3-5, and Campbell improved to 8-1.
